Shelter Overnight & Custodial Technician Position Summary:

The Shelter Overnight & Custodial Technician plays a dual role in ensuring the safety, wellness, and cleanliness of shelter environments for homeless individuals and families. Working under the direction of the Shelter Manager and in collaboration with HELP Inc. staff and volunteers, this position supports shelter operations, monitors client activity, maintains order, and performs custodial duties to uphold hygiene and infection control standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Shelter Operations & Client Support Provide consistent shift coverage, working both independently and as part of a team. Monitor shelter activities to ensure the safety of clients, volunteers, and staff. Enforce shelter rules and respond to client needs with dignity and professionalism. Receive and screen late-arriving clients for sobriety and symptoms of illness. Provide crisis intervention and determine when to escalate to staff or authorities. Offer appropriate referrals to community resources. Document incidents and communications per shelter policy. Ensure proper organization of linens and client linen bags. Assist volunteers and respond to questions or concerns during shifts. Attend staff meetings, trainings, or other activities as assigned. Wellness & Custodial Services Clean and sanitize restrooms, kitchens, dining areas, and other high-touch surfaces. Sweep, mop, vacuum, and maintain floors in assigned areas. Collect and dispose of trash according to health and safety procedures. Sanitize Cots/mats Use cleaning agents safely and follow shelter protocols for chemical use and PPE. Report maintenance issues or supply needs to management promptly.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required:

High School Diploma or GED Preferred:

2 years of experience in human services, or working with populations affected by homelessness, mental health issues, substance use, domestic violence, or poverty

Preferred:

Previous janitorial experience Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform custodial duties independently Knowledge of or willingness to learn local resources in the Hampton Roads area Strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal & written) Ability to maintain professional boundaries and handle crisis situations in a professional manner Basic computer proficiency (Windows OS, Google, & HMIS or similar databases preferred) Dependable, self-motivated, and adaptable to working with a diverse team Ability to follow safety and infection control protocols, including the use of
