Job Description

Description Under direct supervision, performs a variety of custodial duties in the care of City buildings and facilities. Work involves routine janitorial functions such as sweeping, mopping, washing walls and fixtures, etc., and performing physically strenuous activities such as moving furniture, heavy floor stripping, and operating waxing and buffing equipment. Duties fluctuate slightly within the job title according to assignment and specific needs of area of assignment. Employee must exercise some independent judgment in completion of assigned tasks. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential job functions satisfactorily. Essential Job Functions
  • Sweeps, mops, and vacuums floor surfaces.
  • Dusts and cleans desks and other furniture.
  • Cleans and disinfects restrooms; replenishes paper supplies and soap as necessary.
  • Cleans windows, walls, woodwork and light fixtures.
  • Sets up and breaks down conference rooms for meetings, arranging furniture as requested.
  • Cleans and polishes elevators inside and out.
  • Empties trash receptacles; deposits recyclable material in proper receptacles.
  • Cleans and dusts tables and other furniture.
  • Secures and locks building at appropriate times.
  • Polices grounds of and around buildings and facilities picking up trash and other debris; rakes leaves
  • Moves and rearranges furniture to set up for groups using City facilities; may secure buildings after groups finish use; inventories and labels equipment.
  • Retrieves and delivers documents to various departments; shreds documents.
  • May setup and/or breakdown rented equipment for special events.
  • May strip, wax, or buff floor surfaces
  • May perform landscaping maintenance duties such as mowing the grass, picking up trash and debris, raking leaves, etc.
  • May pick up mail at post office; sorts and delivers various departments' mail; retrieves mail and delivers it to post office.
  • May distribute newspapers.
  • May replace light bulbs and fluorescent tubes.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Required Qualifications Completion of High School or GED and some experience in custodial work or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must have a valid driver's license. If assigned to Parks & Recreation some experience and knowledge in the use of heavy floor stripping, waxing, and buffing equipment preferred. Supplemental Information Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of the standard methods, materials, and equipment employed in janitorial work. Knowledge of heavy floor stripping, waxing, and buffing equipment and the ability to use them effectively. Knowledge of cleaning procedures and the use of cleaning materials. Ability to follow instructions. Ability to perform medium to heavy physical work. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments. Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things. Ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information, includes receiving instructions, assignments and/or directions from superiors. Ability to read simple forms; prepare time sheets and leave slips using prescribed format. Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently in Standard English. Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form; to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in or from standardized situations. Ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to utilize mathematical formulas; able to add, subtract, multiply and divide. Ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape. Performance Evaluation Criteria Quality of Work Quantity of Work Dependability Attendance Initiative and Enthusiasm Judgment Cooperation Relationships Coordination of Work Safety Physical Requirements Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including buffers, strippers, scrapers, brooms, mops, rakes, lawn mowers, vacuums, and hand tools, etc. Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Physical demand requirements are for Medium Work. Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using janitorial equipment and hand tools. Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, such as hand tools and janitorial equipment. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination. Does not require the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color. Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal levels of stress. Requires the ability to talk and/or hear: (talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing - perceiving nature of sounds by ear). FLSA Status Non-Exempt
