A Janitor or Cleaner provides cleaning and basic maintenance in buildings such as schools, offices, stores, hospitals or hotels. Cleans and polishes floors, removes trash, vacuums carpets, washes windows, cleans bathrooms, stocks building supplies such as light bulbs and paper towels and performs minor repairs as needed. Holds keys for rooms and building entrances and locks or unlocks them as needed.
Position Overview Rainier School District is seeking dependable, detail-oriented Substitute Custodians to join our Facilities team on an on-call basis. In this role, you will help maintain clean, safe, and welcoming learning environments for our students, staff, and community. As a substitute custodian, you step in to cover planned and short-notice absences. This position offers flexible scheduling and is ideal for individuals seeking intermittent work while supporting local public education.
Experience using and caring for custodial power equipment (e.g., auto scrubbers, carpet extractors, blowers, and vacuums), along with basic floor care techniques (stripping, waxing, shampooing).
Safe Work Practices:
Familiarity with proper handling of cleaning chemicals, basic math for accurate chemical dilution, and general workplace safety standards.
Adaptability & Communication:
Ability to follow oral and written instructions, adapt quickly to short-notice assignments, and communicate positively with students, staff, and visitors. Physical Demands Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods. Capability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 lbs . Ability to stoop, kneel, reach, bend, and safely work from ladders or personnel lifts. Adequate near/far visual acuity and depth perception to perform detailed cleaning and spot safety hazards.
Qualifications & Requirements Education:
High School diploma or equivalent.
Experience:
Prior custodial or facility maintenance experience in a school or institutional setting is preferred.
Driver's License:
Valid Driver's License required.
Clearance:
Successful completion of a Washington State Patrol and FBI Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance prior to employment.
Mandatory Vector Solutions Training :
