Overview The Kitchen Assistant plays a vital role in creating a welcoming and nourishing environment for families staying in our shelter. Working closely with the Kitchen Manager, this position supports the preparation, serving, and cleanup of evening meals while helping to ensure the kitchen operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with food service standards. As an important member of the hospitality team, the Kitchen Assistant works alongside volunteers, helping guide and support their efforts to provide quality meals and meaningful interactions with families each night. With a heart for service, strong teamwork skills, and attention to detail, the Kitchen Assistant helps create a positive dining experience for parents and children during a challenging time in their lives. Role Responsibilities The responsibilities listed below are not all-encompassing. Other related duties may be assigned. Food Preparation (50%) Daily pre-shift meeting with the Kitchen Manager. Review daily the menu for dinner service. Stock check to ensure all materials needed for service are on hand. Follow menu instructions to ensure the menu of the day is prepared and ready to be served at dinner service. Ensure enough food is prepared for up to 16 families. Communicate any stock deficiencies with the Kitchen Manager. Prepare stations for dinner service. Work alongside agency volunteers, providing instruction as needed. Maintain kitchen cleanliness throughout dinner preparation. Assist with food deliveries and proper storage. Dinner Service (50%) Serve Family Promise guests a variety of menu options. Coordinate with the Kitchen Manager and present volunteers to ensure all Family Promise guests are served. Provide a warm, welcoming environment for all families at dinner service. Assist with cleanup following the conclusion of dinner service; cleaning stations, table ware, silverware, etc. Qualifications High School Diploma or equivalent. One year of kitchen experience required. SERV Safe Food Handler certification required. SERV Safe Food Manager certification preferred. Must be able to read and write in English at an intermediate level to read diagrams, instructions, and write basic reports. Must have a valid and unexpired Driver's License, and access to reliable transportation. Ability to pass a background check, including child-safety clearances, given the population served. Comfort and compassion working around families and children who have experienced housing instability and trauma. Work Environment While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. All work will take place within the agency's commercial kitchen.
