Job Description

Under general supervision, a Senior Lifeguard assumes the responsibility of the operation of a public swimming pool in the absence of a Sr. Aquatic Program Leader. Candidates must perform daily water chemical tests, prevent water safety hazards, and enforce all rules and regulations to ensure the safety of the public and their employees. The Sr. Lifeguard leads facility programming and assists with overseeing other pool staff.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Receive general supervision from the Aquatic Coordinator May oversee Recreation Program Leaders, Lifeguard Cadets, and Lifeguards I & II. May coordinate, supervise, and instruct activities at a community swimming pool according to assignment Assist Sr. Aquatic Program Leader in the operation of a swimming pool facility Act as the S.A.P.L in his/her absence Ensure adherence to water safety rules and practices Provide explanation and clarification of pool procedures to patrons Ability to establish compliance with or enforce pool ordinances and rules Respond to participants in danger by performing water rescues and administering first aid Enforce health and safety regulations at the pool facilities May provide swimming instruction Perform pool maintenance tasks to ensure compliance with health and safety standards Maintain, repair and take inventory of first aid and life-saving equipment Possess the skills to administer first aid to victims of accident, injury or sudden illness Participate in all Inservice meetings and training The duties listed above are not intended to be all-inclusive. An employee may also perform other related duties as assigned by their immediate supervisor. This position is considered (non-exempt or exempt) Commitment to team-working, respect and consideration for the skills of others Ability to establish compliance with or enforce pool ordinances and rules Ability to remain calm in emergency situations Ability to follow verbal and written instructions Must demonstrate proficient lifeguard skills (active, passive submerged, passive and spinal extrications, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, and First Aid). Skills must be demonstrated prior to hire. Swim in deep water (swim 500 yd. under 10 minutes, brick retrieval, and 2-minute water tread). Swim Assessment required prior to hire.
Education and Experience:
Candidates must be at least 18 years of age Two years minimum of previous lifeguard experience at a community pool One year minimum of supervisory experience
Required Red Cross Certifications:
Must possess all current (unexpired) certifications Lifeguarding CPR for Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and AED California Title 22 Blood Borne Pathogens Water Safety Instructor Lifeguard Instructor (LGI preferred) Emergency Medical Response (EMR preferred)
