At Axiom Behavioral Health, our mission is to provide transformative, evidence-based care. The Recreational Therapy Technician (RTT) is a vital member of the multidisciplinary team, responsible for bridging the gap between clinical safety and holistic wellness.II. ROLE SUMMARY
The RTT facilitates therapeutic recreational programming designed to improve the physical, cognitive, emotional, and social functioning of patients in a behavioral health setting. This role leverages prior experience as a Mental Health Technician (MHT) to maintain a safe, therapeutic environment while leading activity-based interventions.III. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE
Activity Facilitation:
Lead structured group and individual activities (e.g., expressive arts, movement, leisure education) aligned with established treatment plans. Safety & Milieu Management:
Utilize de-escalation techniques and behavioral observation to ensure a secure environment during off-unit or group activities. Clinical Documentation:
Provide objective, timely documentation of patient participation, mood, and progress within the Electronic Health Record (EHR). Interdisciplinary Collaboration:
Attend treatment team meetings to report observations and coordinate care with Nursing, Social Work, and Physician staff. Environment of Care:
Maintain recreational equipment and spaces, ensuring all materials meet infection control and safety standards.IV. CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS
Education:
High School Diploma or GED required; Associate's/Bachelor's in Human Services preferred.Experience:
Minimum 1 year as a Mental Health Technician (MHT) in a psychiatric or residential setting.Certifications:
CPR/First Aid (required at hire);Lifeguard/Water Safety Technical Skills:
Proficiency in EHR documentation and basic office software.V. COMPETENCIES FOR SUCCESS
De-escalation Mastery:
Expert-level knowledge of safety protocols and verbal intervention. Patient Engagement:
Ability to build rapport with patients experiencing acute psychiatric symptoms or substance use disorders. Adaptability:
Comfortable transitioning between high-energy physical activities and quiet, reflective therapeutic sessions.VI. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to stand/walk for extended periods. Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs (recreational equipment). Must be able to participate in physical de-escalation training (e.g., CPI or SAMA).
