Pool Lifeguard — Job Overview The Pool Lifeguard is responsible for maintaining a safe, welcoming, and fun environment for all YMCA pool participants and guests. Lifeguards actively supervise the pool and deck, respond to emergencies, maintain cleanliness and organization, and support the overall operation of the aquatics program while promoting YMCA values through positive interactions with participants, families, and staff. Responsibilities Promote YMCA values while interacting with program participants, members, families, and staff. Maintain a safe, welcoming, and fun environment on the pool deck. Actively supervise swimmers and respond quickly and effectively to pool emergencies. Coordinate effectively with other lifeguards and YMCA staff during emergencies and daily operations. Keep the pool deck, equipment, and surrounding areas clean, organized, and free of hazards. Ensure pool equipment and supplies are properly put away after use. Check pool equipment and first aid supplies daily and report any missing, damaged, or expired items. Test and record pool chemical levels as required. Training will be provided. Communicate effectively with coworkers regarding scheduling and shift coverage. Participate in 4 hours of in-service training once per month on Saturdays. Follow all YMCA, aquatics, safety, and emergency procedures. Necessary Skills & Qualifications Current American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification or equivalent certification. Must be able to successfully complete a pre-test demonstrating required swimming and rescue skills. Strong guest service and interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with participants, families, coworkers, and supervisors. Ability to remain calm, focused, and effective during emergency situations. Ability to work collaboratively and coordinate with other staff. Ability to communicate scheduling needs and arrange appropriate shift coverage when necessary. Ability to perform pool chemical testing and follow proper safety procedures. Training will be provided. Ability to attend 4 hours of in-service training once per month on Saturdays. Reliable, responsible, and attentive to safety and cleanliness. Ability to meet the physical requirements of lifeguarding, including swimming, rescuing participants, and responding to emergencies.
