POSITION SUMMARY:
Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Maintains constant surveillance of the pool area, using proper scanning technique (10x10). Is prepared to be first responder to all medical emergencies in the building in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area. Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code. Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed. Continually checks the pool for hazardous conditions. Performs chemical testing at appropriate times of the day, as required, and takes appropriate action. Maintains a safe and clean aquatic deck area, including but not limited to: picking up equipment after open swim use, picking up trash, and cleaning the deck and other areas at appropriate times. Dress in appropriate work attire as outlined in the Employee Dress Code, always wearing a nametag, and perform all duties in a safe and conscientious manner. Adheres to all safe practices by following consumer‑boundary policies, adhering to procedures for supervising high‑risk activities, promptly reporting suspicious or inappropriate behavior or policy violations while maintaining strict confidentiality Complete all required annual and bi-annual training requirements for child abuse prevention, anti-harassment, and updated policies. Keep all required certifications current.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum age of 16.
Certifications:
CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid certification. Current YMCA Lifeguarding or Red Cross Lifeguarding and obtain YMCA Lifeguarding Certification within 60 days of hire. Oxygen Administration certification (required within 30 days of hire). Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness. Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must be able to remain alert and sit or stand for extended periods. Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals. Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision. Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue. Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.
