GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The position of Lifeguard is a vital role that ensures the safety of beach goers by supervising swimming activities and by ensuring policies, guidelines, and safety procedures are followed at all times. Lifeguards must be prepared to act responsibly in emergency situations, prevent emergencies from arising, and enforce all facility rules. He/she will use considerable independent judgment while carrying out duties under the supervision of the Parks & Recreation Director. Lifeguards will be required to work weekends AND holidays during the beach season (Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day weekend). Briar Point Beach will be staffed on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays from 10am - 6pm for the period of May 22 - September 7. Holidays are May 31, June 19, July 4, August 10, September 7.
ESSENTIAL
DUTIES and
RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervises swimming activities at the facility and ensures that policies, guidelines, and safety procedures are followed Warns swimmers of improper activities or danger and enforces pool regulations and water safety policies Administers first aid in the event of injury, rescues swimmers in distress or danger of drowning, and administers CPR and/or artificial respiration, if necessary Evaluates conditions for safety and initiates aquatics emergency action plan as required Inspects waterfront to ensure that they are safe and usable Must be visible at times to everyone. Responsible for the enforcement of all beach rules. Document all conversations with patrons who do not follow directions after you remind them of a policy or issue a warning. Keep accurate, daily log of all negative behaviors, incidents that occur with patrons. Report any issues to the Beach Monitor immediately. Consistently check rescue equipment for cleanliness and damage. Adhere to proper dress code as dictated by the Recreation Director.
Certifications Required:
Must have valid lifeguard safety certifications/CPR/First Aid/ certifications. Must be Surf or Non-surf certified through
State of Rhode Island Minimum Qualifications:
Must be 16 years of age or older Must be available to work weekends and holidays Prior Lifeguard training and/or experience preferred Emotional maturity to work with the public. Ability to respond rapidly in a crisis situation. Willingness to learn, teach and enforce beach rules and policies.
Physical Demands:
Must be able to perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and swimming. Must be able to work in warm, humid environments for extended periods of time. Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 20 pounds frequently. Must possess auditory, verbal, and visual capabilities to adequately communicate to staff and guests.
