Job Description

Position Summary:
A Lifeguard plays a vital role in creating a safe, welcoming, and engaging Aquatic Center within the David Williams II Vanderbilt Recreation and Wellness Center (Rec). As part of the Aquatics team, Lifeguards ensure participant safety while fostering a positive and inclusive environment for all patrons. Responsibilities include risk management, participant oversight, emergency response, accurate documentation, facility upkeep, and supporting the Rec's mission. Key Responsibilities:
Safety & Operations:
Enforce University and Rec policies and compliance standards Ensure the safety of the facility and participants through proactive lifeguarding, prevention, and emergency response Open and secure the Aquatic Center according to established procedures Perform and accurately document daily facility checks and chemical readings Recognize and respond effectively in emergency situations Identify and report unsafe conditions or equipment to the Aquatics Leadership Team Complete all required records and reports with accuracy and timeliness
Professionalism & Team Contribution:
Respond to participant inquiries and concerns with professionalism and care Participate in regular in-service training sessions Maintain required physical fitness standards (minimum 500 yards weekly) Assist with special events, including equipment set-up and breakdown in accordance with policy Check and respond to departmental communications (e.g., email) daily Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and adherence to appearance standards Support the Aquatics team and Rec mission through a strong commitment to the role Carry out additional duties as assigned by professional staff
Qualifications:
Previous lifeguarding experience preferred Strong communication and interpersonal skills; able to effectively engage with all patrons Demonstrated knowledge and application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques Current American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification required Ability to pass American Red Cross Lifeguarding course pre requiesites Ability to work independently, multitask, and adapt in a dynamic environment Demonstrates a positive attitude, strong customer service, attention to detail, and a reliable work ethic Ability to perform physical tasks, including cleaning, facility upkeep, and lifting/moving up to 30 lbs. Ability to pass a university-mandated background check Roles and responsibilities may evolve as we continue to grow and enhance the student experience Ability to pass American Red Cross Lifeguarding course prerequisites
Hours:
This is a non-exempt (hourly) position with an expectation of working at least two shifts (approximately 8+ hours) per week, with the ability to work up to 19 hours per week. Shifts may occur Sunday through Saturday, including mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends. Aquatics staff must attend all required trainings, in-service meetings, and department meetings. This is a temporary position (VTS) with an end date of August 17, 2026.
