The Ideal Candidate:

This family is seeking a compassionate and dedicated nanny to care for their delightful 10-year-old son who has Down Syndrome. He is high-functioning and can be quite independent with minimal guidance. Your day will start with errands, light housekeeping, cooking, and/or laundry before picking him up from school around 3.20 PM. Afternoons may include the playground, after-school activities, or coming home for homework and learning. Responsibilities also include supervising Zoom sessions with his ABA therapist or tutor, helping with reading and math, encouraging independence and life skills, preparing family dinner, and helping him through his evening routine. Their son thrives on fun and novel activities, so they seek someone who can keep her motivated with engaging and creative ideas. Establishing a daily plan for him is essential to set her expectations from the start of each day.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in Special Education and/or

Special Needs:

Ideal candidates include special needs nannies, teachers, tutors, and therapists (Occupational, Speech, or Behavioral) with relevant experience and/or certifications. It is preferred that the nanny has experience taking care of a child with special needs or have a special education background either with certifications, training, or education.

Personality Traits:

Their son is social, playful, and imaginative, and he loves to negotiate. The most successful caregivers have been those who can build a great rapport with him, and are playful, witty, energetic, patient, and quick on their feet.

Approach:

Their son thrives on positive reinforcement and would like for the nanny to focus on empowering their son and cultivating his confidence in him to be fully independent. They need someone who is gentle, uses positive reinforcement, stays neutral, and maintains a good temperament.

Tutoring and Life Skills:

When possible, the nanny would include him in cooking, learning to do laundry, and expanding his executive functioning skills. The nanny will work with his BCBA to implement any behavior strategies as necessary. The nanny should help their son with tutoring as needed (e.g., writing, math) and assist in teaching him activities of daily living (ADLs) such as tying his shoes, bathing, and other basic life skills. The family hopes to find someone who will not only support their son's daily routines but also bring joy and creativity to help him grow and thrive in every way.
