Job Description
Bus Monitor — 1:1 Student Health Support
Taft Elementary — Uxbridge Public Schools
Report to Taft Early Learning Center prior to the start of school and ride the assigned bus route (and afternoon dismissal route, as scheduled) to provide 1:1 proximity support to an identified student with a health concern.
Monitor the student throughout transport for signs and symptoms related to the student's health condition, and respond according to the student's Individualized Health Care Plan (IHCP) and any applicable 504 Plan or IEP.
Notify the school nurse, family, and building administration promptly of any health concerns, changes in the student's condition, or incidents occurring during transport.
Assist the bus driver/monitor in addressing seat safety and student-to-student interactions for the assigned student and other riders as needed.
Track and document specific student behaviors or health-related data as directed by the school nurse or administration to help determine changes or additional accommodations.
Maintain confidentiality of student health information in accordance with district policy and applicable law.
Communicate regularly with the school nurse to stay current on the student's care plan and any updates.
Additional Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Willingness to complete district-provided training related to the assigned student's health care needs, including recognition of relevant warning signs and administration of emergency treatment as trained and directed by the school nurse.
- CPR/First Aid certification preferred; willingness to obtain if not currently certified.
- Prior experience working with children, particularly students with medical needs or disabilities, preferred.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to follow a health care plan precisely and communicate clearly with the nurse and family.
- Ability to remain calm and respond effectively in a medical emergency.
- Reliable attendance required, as this role is essential to the student's daily safety during transportation.
Physical Requirements (Must be able to):
- Ride the bus for the full duration of the assigned route(s), both morning and afternoon.
- Move quickly to assist a student during a medical emergency, including bending, reaching, and kneeling as needed.
- Lift or physically assist a student as needed, up to 25 pounds.
- Maintain continuous visual and auditory awareness of the assigned student and surroundings for the entire ride.
- Respond immediately to emergency situations, including administering emergency treatment per training and the student's health care plan.
