Ontario Bus Inc. Academy Instructor Job Overview Ontario Bus Inc. (OBI) is seeking a passionate and motivated person to join their growing CDL Academy Instructor Team. This position is responsible for training, mentoring, and developing both new and experienced school bus drivers while ensuring compliance with New York State Education Department (NYSED), Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations. The ideal candidate is an experienced classroom teacher who is passionate about safety, coaching, and helping others succeed. This role combines classroom instruction, behind-the-wheel training, CDL preparation, and ongoing driver development in a dynamic company setting. • Conduct classroom instruction for prospective and current school bus drivers.
• Train candidates in pre-trip inspections, defensive driving, student management, and emergency procedures.
• Prepare trainees for New York State CDL permits and road examinations.
• Provide behind-the-wheel instruction on public roads and closed training ranges.
• Evaluate trainee performance and provide coaching and corrective guidance. Compliance & Safety
• Ensure all training programs comply with New York State Education Department (NYSED), DOT, and FMCSA regulations.
• Maintain accurate training records and documentation.
• Conduct remedial training for drivers involved in incidents, accidents, or performance concerns.
• Promote a culture of safety and professionalism throughout the organization.
• Ensure driver certifications, licenses, and continuing education requirements remain valid. Mentorship & Leadership
• Support new drivers through onboarding and mentorship programs.
• Assist with driver recruitment events, open houses, and career fairs.
• Serve as a role model for safe driving practices and professional conduct.
• Collaborate to improve training curriculum and instructional materials. Qualifications Required
• Minimum 2 years of classroom instruction experience.
• Strong communication, organization, and public speaking skills.
• Ability to work with adult learners from diverse backgrounds.
• Experience developing training programs and curriculum. Preferred
• Previous OR Current New York State CDL Class B or Class A License with Passenger and School Bus Endorsement.
• New York State Certified School Bus Driver Instructor (SBDI), OR willingness to complete the required certification training upon hire).
• Prior supervisory, leadership, or mentorship experience.
• Experience conducting CDL road and range training. Physical Requirements
• Ability to stand for long periods of time.
• Ability to work in a variety of environments: inside & outside as well as hot & cold weather.
• Ability to enter and exit school buses multiple times daily.
• Ability to demonstrate emergency evacuation procedures.
• Ability to perform pre-trip inspection activities, including bending, lifting, and climbing.
