Job Description

POSITION TITLE
Bus Aide for Regular and/or Handicapped Students
REPORTS TO
Transportation Coordinator and Special Education Director
QUALIFICATIONS
Must have a high school diploma or GED. Must have an Ohio Educational Aide permit. Must have experience working with children. Must have the ability to positively interact with children and adults. Must possess physical strength and ability to move about a school bus to monitor students and to assist handicapped students. Must possess the physical capability to lift and/or manage handicapped students when necessary. Must possess or upgrade skills through formal and/or in-service training related to transporting handicapped students. Must possess or upgrade skills to be able to de-escalate conflict that could arise on a bus.
Job Goal:
To assist a bus driver to maintain a safe environment for all students riding on a school bus.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Applies school bus evacuation procedures in case of an emergency. To assist a bus driver in the supervision of students while these students are on the bus and for handicapped students, also when they enter and exit the bus. Maintains control and discipline of students if needed while the bus driver is driving the bus. Applies all safety rules and regulations for the transportation of students, including any items specific to a child's individual education plan (IEP). If necessary, secures the wheelchairs and seatbelts of students Cooperates with, and is responsible to the bus driver on and bus the aide is assigned.
Additional Working Conditions:
1. Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue. 2. Occasional interactions with unruly children.
