Looking for more than a part-time job? YMCA Expanded Learning is hiring Group Assistants for an 8-week paid internship designed for people who want hands-on experience working with youth while developing the skills to become a strong youth development professional. You'll work directly alongside experienced Group Leaders in elementary and middle school afterschool programs—helping students learn, play, build confidence, and feel like they belong. And there's somewhere to go from here. Successful Group Assistants may be considered for promotion into a Group Leader position with YMCA Expanded Learning. Come ready to learn, contribute, and grow. WHAT YOU'LL ACTUALLY DO

As a Group Assistant, you won't spend your internship watching from the sidelines. You'll be part of the program team from day one. Working alongside a Group Leader, you'll help: Create a safe, welcoming, and engaging environment for students Supervise students during transitions, activities, meals, and recreation Support homework, reading, academic activities, and group projects Lead and participate in sports, games, arts, enrichment, and hands-on activities Build positive relationships with students and encourage their participation Reinforce program expectations, routines, and positive behavior Help take attendance and complete basic program documentation Prepare, organize, and clean program spaces and materials Support school events, family activities, celebrations, and special programs Step in wherever the team needs you to help create a successful afternoon Most importantly, you'll learn how experienced youth development professionals lead a group, manage behavior, facilitate activities, communicate with students, and build a positive program culture.

THIS IS AN INTERNSHIP WITH A NEXT STEP

We're not hiring Group Assistants just to fill an eight-week position. We want to develop our next generation of Group Leaders. Throughout your internship, you'll receive hands-on experience, feedback, training, and coaching designed to help you strengthen the skills needed to lead students independently. Team members who demonstrate strong performance, reliability, initiative, and readiness may be considered for advancement into a Group Leader position as opportunities become available. That means how you show up matters. Learn the role. Build your skills. Prove you're ready for more.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

You don't need years of youth development experience to start here. You do need to be someone who is ready to work, learn, and contribute.

Strong Group Assistants:

Enjoy working directly with children and adolescents Show up consistently and on time Bring positive energy without needing to be constantly directed Take initiative when something needs to get done Communicate respectfully with students, coworkers, families, and school partners Stay patient and composed when students need additional support Participate in activities instead of watching from the sidelines Adapt when schedules and plans change Accept coaching and put feedback into practice Understand that strong programs require everyone to contribute Want to keep learning and taking on greater responsibility We're especially interested in people who may be early in their careers but are serious about becoming excellent at working with young people.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must: Be at least 18 years old Have completed 48 college units OR pass the Instructional Aide Exam If you need to take the exam, we can provide guidance and support as you prepare Successfully complete required DOJ/FBI background clearances Obtain CPR, First Aid, and AED certification within 30 days of hire Required training is provided at no cost to you
