About Mission Bay ESA Mission Bay Elementary School Academy (ESA) is TEL HI's new after-school program located at Mission Bay Elementary School. The program provides academic support, recreation, enrichment, STEAM activities, and social-emotional learning in a safe, engaging, and inclusive environment. As a member of the program's inaugural team, the Recreation Specialist will help build Mission Bay ESA's culture, routines, traditions, and student experience from the ground up. Position Overview The Recreation Specialist works closely with the Mission Bay ESA Program Manager and fellow staff to lead high-quality recreation and enrichment programming for elementary school students in grades K-5. The ideal candidate enjoys working directly with children and can make physical activity welcoming and engaging for students with a wide range of interests, backgrounds, identities, and athletic abilities. In addition to leading sports, games, and movement activities, the Recreation Specialist will help supervise students, provide academic and enrichment support, and contribute to the daily operation and growth of the new Mission Bay program. Responsibilities Plan and lead inclusive, age-appropriate recreation activities, active games, fitness exercises, and traditional and nontraditional sports for students in grades K-5. Create activities that encourage teamwork, confidence, cooperation, sportsmanship, and healthy habits. Adapt activities so students of all abilities, experience levels, and genders can participate successfully. Help launch and shape Mission Bay ESA's recreation program, including its routines, traditions, equipment systems, and student engagement practices. Assist with forming teams and developing recreation workshops, tournaments, camps, or special events, which may occasionally take place during evenings or weekends. Support daily program operations and the active supervision of students. Lead enrichment activities, learning games, homework assistance, tutoring, and small-group activities as needed. Help safely pick up and walk students from partner schools or designated locations to the program. Establish and follow safety procedures, teach safe fitness practices, and support injury prevention. Maintain an accurate inventory of recreation equipment and keep activity areas and shared program spaces clean and organized. Foster positive, appropriate relationships with students, families, school partners, and fellow staff. Observe students' needs, behavior, and progress and follow up appropriately through staff discussions and communication with families. Participate in staff meetings, individual supervision, professional development, and organization-wide trainings. Support fundraising and community events as needed to strengthen and sustain TEL HI programs. Take on additional related responsibilities as assigned. Qualifications Experience working directly with elementary school-aged children or youth. Experience leading recreation activities, coaching a team, facilitating sports camps, or delivering similar youth programming. Understanding of positive youth development principles and current best practices. Ability to lead active groups and create an environment that is structured, safe, welcoming, and fun. Strong communication, teamwork, organization, and behavior-management skills. Ability to participate actively in physical games and recreation activities. Reliable, flexible, and excited to help build a new after-school program. Bilingual candidates who speak Chinese and English or Spanish and English are strongly encouraged to apply. Education and Experience A high school diploma or equivalent is required. College-level coursework in child development, education, recreation, kinesiology, or a related field is preferred. A combination of relevant education and experience will be considered. Two years of experience providing direct services to youth in an educational, recreation, camp, or after-school setting is preferred. Teaching or coaching experience is a plus.
