JOB OVERVIEW

This position performs a wide range of duties including writing and implementing natural resource management plans; supervise and perform natural community restoration and management, park landscape tree planting, and routine maintenance of landscaped and natural park areas, mulching, pruning, weeding, watering, trimming, planting, strawing and cultural practices necessary to provide well-managed park landscapes.

RESPONSIBLITIES

Supervises the design, implementation, restoration and maintenance of various types natural communities within the parks system. Areas include forests, wetlands, prairies and wildlife management areas. Activities to be done in accordance with international standards of arboriculture, maintaining nursery stock to meet national standards, collecting and maintaining data necessary for the parks GIS based tree inventory and tree risk management program. Responsible for planning, coordinating, conducting and overseeing activities such as: applying herbicides, fungicides and insecticides; pruning trees and shrubs; planting and maintaining trees and shrubs. Responsible for introducing wildlife habitat areas, native grasses, and wildflower areas into the landscape; developing seasonal, annual, and long-term management practices to sustain healthy natural communities and landscapes. Performs a wide range of duties such as operating tractors and equipment with various implements including seed planters, front loaders, landscape rakes, augers, sprayers, tree shears, and brush hogs. Ability to use numerous hand tools including shovels, rakes, chainsaws, pruners and shears. Purchases equipment and materials needed to implement and maintain quality natural areas within the park system. Prepares daily, monthly and annual reports as required by immediate supervisor. Performs site analysis and develops short and long-term management plans for park areas. Conducts training sessions. May be periodically required to assist in Park Programming and activities outside of normal job duties and hours. Develops an effective working relationship with volunteers, civic groups, service organizations, and the general public. Pursues appropriate grants to assist in funding natural resource management. Responsible for writing prescribed burn plans in accordance with approved management plans. Assists with park construction and maintenance projects when needed. Assists with developing, scheduling, and conducting park programs. Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

Education Bachelor's degree in Natural Resource Management or closely related field. An equal combination of education, experience, and/or training may be considered. Certifications International Society of Arboriculture Certification required or ability to obtain within one year. Must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record with a valid Missouri Class A Commercial Driver's License with air brake certification, or the ability to obtain one within six months of employment. Job Experience Minimum of three (3) years directly related work experience including at least one (1) year in a supervisory capacity. Knowledge, skills and abilities A valid Missouri Pesticide Applicators License required, or the ability to obtain one within six months of employment.
