Recreation Coordinator About DAWNcil DAWN Center for Independent Living (DAWNcil) is a grassroots, consumer-driven nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting self-direction, accessibility, and equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities. We believe people with disabilities should have the tools, resources, and support needed to live independently and participate fully in their communities. We are seeking a creative, compassionate, and community-minded professional to join our team as a Recreation Coordinator serving individuals with disabilities throughout Morris, Sussex, and Warren Counties. Position Overview The Recreation Coordinator plays an important role in creating opportunities for individuals with disabilities to connect with others, explore their interests, participate in their communities, and build meaningful relationships. Working directly with DAWNcil consumers, the Recreation Coordinator develops and coordinates social, recreational, and community-based activities that reflect the interests, preferences, and ideas of the people we serve. Through consumer input and ongoing engagement, the Recreation Coordinator helps create programming designed to encourage participation, foster connection, and reduce social isolation. In addition to coordinating recreation opportunities, this position provides information and referral, advocacy, and supportive consultation to individuals with disabilities and their families. The Recreation Coordinator works collaboratively with consumers to better understand their interests, goals, and support needs while connecting them with appropriate community resources and additional DAWNcil services. This role combines creativity, relationship-building, community outreach, advocacy, resource navigation, and program coordination. The successful candidate will be organized, adaptable, self-directed, and passionate about creating inclusive opportunities for people with disabilities. Key Responsibilities Partner with consumers to identify interests, preferences, and ideas for social and recreational programming Develop a variety of recreational, social, and community-based activities throughout the year based on consumer input Plan, coordinate, and oversee monthly activities and events as well as support planning and execution of DAWN's 3 larger events each year Build and maintain relationships with community partners, venues, and organizations to expand opportunities for participation Develop and distribute a monthly recreation calendar to promote upcoming activities and encourage consumer participation Identify creative and inclusive opportunities that promote social connection and reduce isolation Provide information, referral, and assistance to individuals with disabilities, their families, and members of the community Assist individuals and families in identifying and accessing appropriate programs, services, benefits, and community supports Maintain current knowledge of resources and services available to people with disabilities, including education, housing, benefits, employment, and other areas that support independent living Advocate alongside consumers to promote informed choice, self-direction, access, and independence Build and maintain collaborative relationships with federal, state, private, and nonprofit organizations serving people with disabilities Connect consumers with additional DAWNcil programs and services when appropriate Collaborate with staff across program areas to promote seamless and coordinated support for consumers accessing multiple services Maintain accurate and timely consumer service records in accordance with contractual and agency requirements Facilitate the distribution of consumer satisfaction surveys in accordance with contractual obligations Complete required trainings, webinars, staff meetings, and professional development activities Organizational Participation In addition to direct consumer services and recreation programming, the Recreation Coordinator will: Provide information and statistical input to support annual and long-range planning Facilitate workshops, public forums, and other educational opportunities related to services and resources Participate in advocacy efforts, community outreach, special events, work groups and other agency-wide initiatives Support additional agency activities and responsibilities as assigned Qualifications We welcome candidates who are passionate about creating inclusive communities and supporting people with disabilities in pursuing their interests, goals, and independence.
Qualifications include:
Previous professional experience working with individuals with disabilities Bachelor's degree preferred Understanding of and commitment to the Independent Living Philosophy Knowledge of programs, services, benefits, entitlements, and supports available to individuals with disabilities Strong interpersonal, organizational, and written and verbal communication skills Ability to build positive and effective relationships with individuals with disabilities, families, community partners, agencies, and other stakeholders Creativity and enthusiasm for developing engaging social, recreational, and community-based opportunities Ability to manage multiple responsibilities, establish priorities, and meet established deadlines Capacity to work independently while contributing positively to a collaborative and supportive team environment Strong critical thinking, creativity, sound judgment, and solution-focused problem-solving skills Ability to adapt to changing priorities, consumer interests, and community needs Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office and other technology platforms as part of daily work activities Professional and respectful demeanor when representing DAWNcil in the community A valid driver's license is needed for positions requiring travel; candidates who drive on behalf of the agency must maintain a clean driving record, be legally authorized to drive in New Jersey, and provide proof of auto insurance coverage with minimum limits of $100,000/$300,000 Successful completion of an annual driving record background check, when applicable Why Join DAWNcil?
