Job Description
The Nevada Department of Corrections is seeking to fill an Athletic and Recreation Specialist at Ely State Prison. The incumbent in this position will be developing or revising athletic/recreational activities due to cultural diversity and physical limitations of offenders, equipment and athletic facilities available; provide a broad range of athletic and recreational programs including sports, hobby/crafts, social groups and academic and self-help education. They will recruit and schedule offenders, prepare rosters, provide instruction and explain rules, obtain and set up equipment, develop special programs for individual offenders and observe established safety and security and security measures. This position will require the incumbent to work directly with offenders. Athletic and Recreation Specialists plan, organize, and oversee athletic and recreational activities to ensure appropriate use of leisure time, develop and/or maintain fitness, and relieve emotional stress.
Three or more years of applicable experience as described in the job duties and graduation from high school or equivalent education. Evaluate athletic and recreational activities and assess benefits and population interest. Adapt activities to diverse population needs and facility resources. Offer a variety of athletic and recreational programs, recruit and schedule participants, and prepare rosters. Provide instruction on activities, explain rules, obtain and set up equipment, and ensure safety and security. Engage in activities, observe skills and limitations, provide guidance and counseling, and initiate discussions to diffuse potentially volatile situations. Establish recognition awards and promote fairness, good sportsmanship, and active participation. Maintain records, track program progress, and contribute to budgeting and expenditure tracking. Select, supervise, and train assistants from the assigned population, evaluate performance, and calculate payroll and/or work credit information. Prepare and maintain records and reports on activities. Assist in the development of program budgets and track expenditures. Secure, store, and maintain equipment and facilities. Request equipment purchases or replacements for improved opportunities. Collaborate with others to ensure appropriate security and supervision during activities. Perform related duties as assigned.
