Overview We are seeking an intelligent, reliable, and compassionate person to join our 24-year-old son J's support team in Herndon, Virginia. J is nonspeaking and has apraxia and autism. He is bright, thoughtful, creative, physically active, and deeply interested in learning, nature, exercise, music, poetry, and big ideas. J communicates primarily by spelling on a letterboard. Team members interested in advanced communication-partner responsibilities receive specialized training in supporting this form of communication. Position Structure Compensation is tied to responsibilities performed. Higher compensation levels reflect a broader range of responsibilities and skills. Each level includes the responsibilities of the preceding levels. Level 1: Attendant Responsibilities ($25/hour) The foundation of the role is Personal Assistance (Attendant) support, including: Assisting with daily routines and personal support needs Providing supervision and ensuring safety Supporting participation in community activities Accompanying J on walks, outings, appointments, and recreational activities Assisting with meals and other individual-specific support tasks Supporting exercise and fitness activities Completing required documentation Tasks that support J in his home and also benefit the entire household General housecleaning Family laundry Meal preparation for family members Household errands Grocery shopping Household organization projects•Level 2: Level 1 + Educational, Enrichment, & Creative Responsibilities ($30/hour) Examples include: Designing, leading, and participating with J in enrichment activities Reading books and educational materials aloud Homework and academic support Nature exploration and educational outings Arts and crafts projects Cooking, fitness, and other skill-building activities Poetry, music, writing, and creative projects•Level 3: Level 2 + Advanced Communication Partner Responsibilities ($38+/hour) This specialization involves learning to support J's communication through spelling.

Examples include:

Participating in paid, specialized, family-provided, on-the-job communication-partner training Assisting J with communication during academic work and creative projects Developing the skills needed to serve as one of J's communication partners in the community Compensation at this level increases with demonstrated competency, reliability, and experience. Schedule We offer a variety of weekday and weekend shifts between 8:00 AM and 7:00 PM. Applicants are welcome to apply even if they are available for only a portion of those hours. Travel Opportunities For interested team members, opportunities are available to accompany J and his family on local outings, day trips, conferences, vacations, and occasional overnight or multi-night travel.
