This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who enjoys working with customers, employees, dogs, and a fast-paced retail environment. The General Manager is expected to take ownership of store operations, maintain a high standard of customer service, manage the grooming operation, lead the store team, control costs, drive profitable sales, and ensure the business operates smoothly and professionally. The General Manager reports directly to ownership and is expected to operate the store with an owner's mindset. Primary ResponsibilitiesStore Operations Manage the day-to-day operation of the Salty Paws Melbourne location. Ensure the store opens and closes properly and operates according to established procedures. Maintain a clean, organized, attractive, and safe store environment. Ensure retail displays, bakery products, doggie ice cream, grooming areas, and customer areas are maintained to brand standards. Monitor inventory levels and coordinate product ordering. Help minimize product loss, waste, shrinkage, and unnecessary expenses. Maintain store equipment and promptly report or coordinate repairs when necessary. Ensure appropriate opening, closing, cash-handling, and security procedures are followed. Customer Experience Create a welcoming, upbeat, dog-friendly environment. Build relationships with customers and their pets. Resolve customer concerns professionally and promptly. Educate customers about Salty Paws products and services. Encourage repeat business through excellent service. Help customers select appropriate treats, products, grooming services, and other offerings. Maintain a high standard of professionalism with both customers and employees. Grooming Operations The General Manager is responsible for overseeing the business side of the grooming department.
Responsibilities include:
Scheduling grooming appointments and maintaining appropriate capacity. Coordinating groomer schedules. Monitoring grooming productivity and appointment availability. Ensuring required customer and pet information is collected. Confirming rabies vaccination documentation when required. Ensuring grooming intake procedures are followed. Communicating pricing, matting charges, cancellation policies, and other grooming policies to customers. Monitoring grooming quality and customer satisfaction. Helping resolve grooming-related customer concerns. Monitoring groomer productivity, commissions, payroll, and labor costs. Ensuring grooming rooms and equipment remain clean and sanitary. Coordinating equipment maintenance and replacement when necessary. The General Manager is not expected to perform professional grooming unless separately trained and authorized to do so. Employee Leadership Recruit, interview, train, schedule, and supervise store employees. Establish clear performance expectations. Create weekly employee schedules based on anticipated business volume. Monitor attendance, punctuality, customer service, and job performance. Coach employees and address performance concerns promptly. Maintain appropriate staffing without excessive labor costs. Approve time records and help ensure payroll information is accurate. Create a positive, professional workplace culture. Cross-train employees so the store can operate efficiently during busy periods and employee absences. Sales and Financial Performance The General Manager is responsible for helping grow store revenue while controlling expenses.
Key responsibilities include:
Monitor daily and weekly sales. Track retail, bakery, doggie ice cream, grooming, event, and other revenue streams. Understand store sales goals and work toward achieving them. Monitor labor costs as a percentage of revenue. Monitor grooming productivity. Control unnecessary overtime. Monitor inventory and product margins. Identify opportunities to improve profitability. Reduce waste and avoid unnecessary expenses. Review operating results with ownership. The General Manager should understand that increased sales alone do not define success. The goal is to grow profitable sales while maintaining an excellent customer experience. Marketing and Community Support Local marketing and community engagement are led by another team member. The General Manager will support those efforts as needed by: Ensuring the store is prepared for promotions, events, and community activities. Coordinating appropriate staffing for in-store events. Helping execute promotions developed by the marketing lead. Providing feedback on customer response, promotions, and local opportunities. Helping capture appropriate store content when requested. Communicating upcoming store activities to employees. Supporting partnerships and events when they affect store operations. The General Manager is not primarily responsible for developing the local marketing strategy, sourcing community partnerships, or leading external outreach. Events and Parties Coordinate the operational side of in-store dog birthday parties and special events. Ensure appropriate staffing, products, setup, and cleanup. Work with the marketing/community lead on event execution. Monitor event-related sales and operational needs. Help ensure events do not negatively affect normal store operations. Inventory Management Monitor inventory levels and product movement. Place or recommend product orders. Maintain appropriate stock levels without excessive inventory. Identify slow-moving products. Ensure proper product rotation. Monitor bakery and food-product expiration dates. Maintain accurate receiving procedures. Help prevent inventory shrinkage. Regulatory and Safety Compliance Ensure store procedures comply with applicable local, state, and franchise requirements. Maintain appropriate sanitation standards. Follow food-product handling and storage requirements applicable to the business. Maintain required grooming documentation. Ensure animals are handled appropriately and safely. Maintain incident reports when appropriate. Ensure employees follow workplace safety procedures. Ensure no unauthorized overnight animal boarding occurs at the store. Technology and Administration The General Manager should be comfortable using the store's technology systems, including: Point-of-sale system Grooming appointment software QuickBooks Time or other timekeeping systems Email Scheduling systems Basic spreadsheets and reports Security and camera systems The General Manager will help ensure sales, timekeeping, appointments, inventory, and other operating information is entered accurately.
