GENERAL MANAGER
The Bean & Barrel — 45 High Street, Reading, MA 01867 Full-Time, Salaried | $70,000-$100,000 based on experience About the Business The Bean & Barrel is a new café opening this fall on High Street in Reading. We serve coffee and espresso drinks and North End pastries starting at 6:00 AM, and cocktails from 11:00 AM until close at 10:00 PM. We are hiring an opening General Manager. Position Summary The General Manager is responsible for the daily operation and financial performance of the café. This includes staffing, scheduling, inventory, cost control, product quality, guest service, and compliance. The GM reports to ownership and has authority to hire and manage the full hourly team, including shift managers, baristas, and bartenders. Because this is a new location, the GM will also handle pre-opening work: building the staff, running training, setting up systems and vendor accounts, and executing a soft opening before the public launch. Responsibilities Staffing Recruit, interview, and hire shift managers, baristas, and bartenders Train new staff and develop existing staff toward more responsibility Build and manage the weekly schedule within labor targets Conduct performance reviews and handle corrective action Financial Manage the sales, cost of goods, labor, and controllable expenses Order and manage inventory for coffee, bar, food, and supplies Manage vendor relationships and negotiate where appropriate Oversee cash handling, deposits, and daily reconciliation Report results to ownership on a weekly basis Operations and Quality Maintain quality standards for espresso, brewed coffee, cocktails, and food Maintain equipment, including espresso machines and grinders; schedule service as needed Set and enforce opening, closing, and cleaning procedures Oversee the guest experience and personally handle escalated issues Requirements Minimum 3 years of experience as the senior on-site manager of a café, coffee shop, or restaurant with comparable volume Experience with scheduling and placing orders Experience hiring, training, and retaining an hourly team Working knowledge of coffee and espresso preparation, including drink standards, equipment operation, and basic troubleshooting Proficiency with POS, scheduling, and inventory software ServSafe certification,, or ability to obtain before opening Availability to work opening, mid, and closing shifts, including weekends and holidays Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 50 pounds Preferred Knowledge of cocktails and spirits Experience opening a new location Experience managing a business with both a daytime and evening service period Compensation and Schedule $70,000-$100,000 per year, based on experience Paid time off, staff meals Store hours are 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily; bar service begins at 11:00 AM Target start date: mid-August 2026 Planned opening: September 1, 2026 How to Apply Send a resume and a brief cover note describing the size of the operation you last managed, the size of the team you were responsible for, and your experience with coffee and bar programs.
