Job Description
Switchback Beer Garden & Smokehouse is seeking an experienced, hands-on Bar Manager to lead our bar team and help maintain a fun, efficient, and high-energy guest experience. This is not an entry-level bartending position. Qualified candidates should have at least 3 to 5 years of high-volume bartending experience , preferably in a craft cocktail bar, brewery, busy restaurant, or similar hospitality environment. Previous supervisory or bar management experience is strongly preferred. We are looking for someone who is outgoing, responsible, organized, punctual, self-motivated, and able to remain calm and positive during extremely busy services. The ideal candidate is a strong bartender who enjoys being behind the bar, leading by example, coaching others, and creating an environment that is enjoyable for both guests and employees. Switchback Beer Garden & Smokehouse operates with a craft-casual service model that combines elements from several restaurant styles. Our team works together to greet guests, explain how the restaurant operates, prepare beverages, deliver food, maintain the dining room, and create an energetic community atmosphere. The Bar Manager must be comfortable working within this team-focused model and helping wherever needed. Schedule and Availability This position requires good daytime, evening, and weekend availability. Candidates should also be available for busy weekend shifts, special events, live music, major sports watch parties, and longer shifts when business volume requires additional leadership. Bar Manager Responsibilities Lead daily service bar operations while working actively behind the bar Prepare craft cocktails accurately, efficiently, and consistently Pour and serve Switchback beer while maintaining strong product knowledge Manage high-volume service without sacrificing quality or hospitality Train, coach, and support bartenders and other front-of-house employees Maintain cocktail recipes, specifications, garnishes, and presentation standards Help develop seasonal cocktails, specials, and beverage promotions Monitor bar inventory, product usage, waste, and ordering needs Receive and properly store beer, wine, spirits, mixers, and bar supplies Maintain an organized, clean, and fully stocked bar Complete opening, closing, and shift-change procedures Handle cash and credit card transactions using Toast POS Ensure proper cash-handling and checkout procedures are followed Assist with employee scheduling, shift coverage, and daily staffing needs Promote accountability, teamwork, professionalism, and clear communication Resolve guest concerns respectfully and professionally Ensure compliance with Vermont alcohol service laws and company policies Support the dining room by running food, bussing tables, greeting guests, and assisting other front-of-house employees when needed Upsell beer, cocktails, spirits, food, merchandise, and to-go beer while maintaining genuine hospitality Required Experience and Qualifications At least 3 to 5 years of high-volume bartending experience Craft cocktail bartending experience strongly preferred Previous bar management, supervisory, lead bartender, or key-holder experience preferred Strong knowledge of classic cocktails, spirits, beer, wine, and responsible alcohol service Ability to produce multiple cocktails quickly and accurately during high-volume service Experience training and coaching bartenders Strong organizational, communication, and time-management skills Ability to identify problems and make sound decisions during busy shifts Comfortable providing employees with clear direction and constructive feedback Experience with inventory, ordering, cost control, and waste reduction is preferred Experience using Toast POS is a plus Current Vermont Department of Liquor and Lottery First-Class Server Training certification, or the ability to obtain certification before beginning bar shifts Ability to remain on your feet and move quickly throughout a busy shift Reliable transportation and consistent attendance Good weekend availability Who We Are Looking For We are looking for someone who: Moves faster when the restaurant gets busier Leads by example rather than managing from the sidelines Takes ownership of the bar and follows through on responsibilities Communicates clearly and respectfully Supports coworkers without creating unnecessary drama Understands the importance of cleanliness, consistency, and preparation Enjoys creating genuine connections with guests Can balance speed, personality, professionalism, and attention to detail Wants to contribute ideas and help improve the overall beverage program We have built an experienced and supportive team, including several employees who have been with us since we opened.
