District Primary Purpose:

To assist and promote La Joya ISD in implementing a rigorous curriculum/instructional program that supports student success and achievement.\n

Department Primary Purpose:

Assist the Director in directing and managing the child nutrition operation of the district. Plan and implement programs meeting regulatory and nutritional requirements for students, promote development of sound nutritional practices, and maintain a safe and sanitary environment.\n

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

Bachelor's degree in food and nutrition, dietetics, home economics, food service management, or business administration\nMajor in accounting or management preferred\nEight hours of food safety training (completed not more than five years prior to employee's start date or within 30 days of employee's start date)\nRegistered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration preferred.\nClear and valid Texas driver's license\n

Experience/Knowledge:

Five years or more experience in the field of school food service\nKnowledge of menu planning, food purchasing, and preparation of foods in food service\nenvironment\nAbility to conduct on-site inspections of food service facilities districtwide\nAbility to manage budget and personnel\nAbility to implement policy and procedures\nAbility to interpret data\nStrong organization, communication, and interpersonal skills.\n

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Assist the Director in managing and directing the district's child nutrition programs.\nAssist the Director in the areas of inventory, warehouse procedures, and of food/supplies for the schools.\nDevelop menus meeting established nutritional requirements for students.\nPrepare modified menus for children with special dietary needs.\nProcure special food items and equipment to meet the needs of students in compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and/or IDEA.\nOversee all facets of food production in coordination with the Director to ensure correct guidelines are implemented.\nWork cooperatively with campus principal to create lunch schedules and resolve personnel issues.\nEstablish and direct process of providing free and reduced lunch applications following United States Department of Agriculture and Texas Education Agency guidelines for meal eligibility and reimbursement of funds.\nAssist the Director to develop and maintain written procedures for all food service operations.\nDemonstrate the awareness of district-community needs and initiate activities to meet those identified needs.\nDemonstrate the use of appropriate and effective techniques for community, parent, student, and staff involvement.\nBudget and Inventory\nDevelop and administer budget based on documented needs and ensure operations are cost effective and funds are managed prudently.\nWork cooperatively to develop and implement a cost-effective and efficient food procurement and inventory system meeting both federal and Texas Education Agency (TEA) standards.\nAssist with the evaluation of formal bids and make recommendations for the awarding of contracts for school board approval.\nApprove and forward invoices and purchase orders for food service department to accounting department.\nDevelop and implement inventory and stock control program for equipment and supplies and recommend replacement and disposal of obsolete equipment as necessary.\nPolicy, Reports, and Law\nImplement federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and board policy.\nCompile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.\nEnsure employee time records are accurately maintained and data necessary to process food service payroll is delivered in a timely manner.\nComplete minimum annual continuing education requirements.\nPersonnel Management\nSelect, train, supervise, and evaluate staff and make recommendations relative to assignment, retention, discipline, and dismissal.\nReport any problems or discrepancies in relation to personnel, equipment, production, etc. following campus visits.\nPrepare, review, and revise job descriptions for food service department positions.\nDevelop training options and improvement plans to ensure exemplary operation in the food service area.\nSafety\nEnsure measures are in place and operating to protect food, supplies, and equipment in school cafeterias, lunchrooms, and warehouses.\nMaintain safety standards conforming with federal, state, and insurance regulations and develop a program of preventive safety.\nOrganize and conduct training programs to promote safe food handling and a safe work environment.\nOther duties as assigned.\n

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Supervise, evaluate, and recommend the hiring and firing of campus cafeteria managers, supervisors, and support staff assigned to the child nutrition department•.\n
