Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) Position Summary The Night Shift Supervisor provides leadership, clinical oversight, and operational supervision for the facility during overnight hours. This position is responsible for coordinating the continuation of responsibilities from the day-shift Manager on Duty, organizing staffing and assignments, monitoring resident care, and holding employees accountable for attendance, performance, and compliance with facility expectations. The Night Shift Supervisor serves as the primary overnight leadership contact and must promptly communicate significant clinical, staffing, safety, or operational concerns to the Director of Nursing and Administrator. This is a working supervisory position. The Night Shift Supervisor must be prepared to accept a floor nursing assignment when requested due to call-ins, census changes, resident acuity, emergencies, or other facility needs. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Shift Coordination and Leadership Receive a complete shift handoff from the day-shift Manager on Duty or designated leadership representative. Review and continue unresolved clinical, staffing, operational, safety, and resident-care responsibilities from the previous shift. Establish overnight priorities and communicate expectations clearly to nursing and floor staff. Serve as the primary leader and decision-maker in the facility during assigned overnight hours. Conduct routine rounds throughout the facility to monitor resident care, staff performance, safety, cleanliness, and regulatory compliance. Ensure that significant issues are appropriately addressed, documented, and communicated to the oncoming shift. Provide a thorough handoff to the day-shift Manager on Duty or nursing leadership before leaving the facility. Staffing and Assignment Management Review the staffing schedule and organize assignments for licensed nurses, certified nursing assistants, medication aides, and other assigned floor staff. Adjust staffing and assignments based on resident census, acuity, call-ins, admissions, hospital returns, changes in condition, and facility needs. Ensure that assignments are equitable and provide appropriate resident coverage. Respond promptly to staffing shortages and follow the facility's established call-in and staffing procedures. Verify that all employees report to work on time and are present in their assigned areas at the beginning of the shift. Hold employees accountable for tardiness, absenteeism, failure to follow assignments, and failure to perform assigned duties. Document staffing issues, call-ins, attendance concerns, and assignment changes according to facility procedures. Notify the Director of Nursing and Administrator when staffing concerns may affect resident safety, quality of care, or regulatory compliance. Staff Supervision and Accountability Directly supervise nursing and floor staff during the night shift. Ensure that employees understand and carry out their assigned roles and responsibilities. Reinforce facility policies, procedures, standards of conduct, resident rights, infection-prevention practices, and safety requirements. Provide real-time coaching, redirection, and education when performance concerns are identified. Address inappropriate conduct, failure to complete assignments, resident-care concerns, and policy violations promptly. Document employee performance concerns and report them to the Director of Nursing and Administrator for follow-up. Promote teamwork, professionalism, respectful communication, and accountability throughout the shift. Ensure staff remain attentive and responsive to residents throughout the night. Clinical and Resident-Care Oversight Monitor the delivery of nursing care to ensure residents receive timely, appropriate, and compassionate services. Respond to resident changes in condition, falls, injuries, emergencies, behavioral concerns, and other significant events. Ensure that physicians, responsible parties, and facility leadership are notified as required. Verify that required assessments, interventions, monitoring, documentation, and follow-up are completed. Assist with admissions, readmissions, transfers, discharges, and hospital returns occurring during the night shift. Ensure medications and treatments are administered and documented according to physician orders and facility policy. Monitor infection-prevention practices, including hand hygiene, isolation precautions, and appropriate use of personal protective equipment. Protect resident rights, privacy, dignity, safety, and confidentiality. Immediately report suspected abuse, neglect, exploitation, misappropriation, or other reportable concerns according to facility policy and applicable law. Leadership Communication Communicate directly with the Director of Nursing and Administrator regarding significant clinical, staffing, safety, regulatory, employee, or operational concerns.
