Temporary Part-time (20 hours per week) Reports to: Children's Education Manager Burritt offers a unique and exciting environment to work with enthusiastic learners, educators, and museum professionals in a scenic and inspiring location. Position Summary The Museum Educator (ME) works with the Children's Education Manager and other education team members to develop and present educational programming with an emphasis on ensuring a positive experience for all students and other guests. Programs include school tours, day camps, homeschool enrichment classes, outreach programs, virtual learning presentations, festivals and special programming. The ME oversees interns, summer program assistants and volunteers. This position requires extensive collaboration with other members of the staff, outside experts, and volunteers. Work is performed in an office setting, and in classrooms, historic buildings, and outdoors during operating hours and during special events. This includes working in various weather conditions. The ability to demonstrate Heartfelt Hospitality at all times and under a variety of circumstances is a requisite of this position. Key Responsibilities Plan and conduct in-house and outreach educational programs for children and families. Develop new programs that support Burritt's mission and long-range plans, including conducting independent research as needed. Train and supervise contract instructors, volunteers, and interns and carry out other work of the education department. Promote good attendance in all educational programs of the museum. Assist with promotional materials, including newsletter articles, field trip guides, and other marketing materials. Verify supplies and equipment are available and organized for educational programs. Attend education staff meetings. Organize and manage the supplies and equipment needed for educational programs. Organize, lead and assist with set up for events as needed (lifting, walking, bending, and climbing required). Represent and promote Burritt in the community through outreach activities such as homeschool fairs, street festivals, and expos. If serving as registrar, communicate in a friendly, effective and timely manner with teachers and other field trip organizers to plan and book field trips and other programs. Assist in the daily activities of educational programs as needed. Substitute as an Historic Park Interpreter or Barnyard Worker if needed. Assist with special events such as festivals, holiday events and concerts as needed. Be familiar with established sitewide emergency procedures to ensure visitor safety. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications and Skills Knowledge of learning theory and at least one discipline related to the Burritt's mission. Experience in program/curriculum development and/or working in traditional classroom or museum education. Experience working with children, in a museum or historical environment preferred. Experience working with community and professional organizations. Willingness to obtain and apply knowledge of 19 century farm and household skills, including historic crafts, cooking, and cleaning. Ability to work in a team-oriented environment and to supervise volunteers and interns effectively. Ability to interact positively with the public, particularly children and to work in a historically accurate manner. Ability to project a positive and professional image when representing the museum, both internally and externally. Ability to accommodate schedule changes and work in various weather conditions. Ability to work weekends and evenings as necessary. A demonstrated passion for the Burritt's mission. Friendly, outgoing personality with strong communication and interpersonal skills. Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills Experience with public speaking desired. Proficient in the Microsoft Suite, especially WORD, Excel, and Outlook. Bachelor's degree, preferably in education, museum studies, public history or field related to museum's mission. Ability to speak the English language fluently. Work is conducted in an office setting with outdoor work when presenting, preparing and/or supervising volunteers and staff for events. Working in inclement weather is required at times. This position requires a valid driver's license, transportation, and a clear background check. This position requires the ability to walk unaided up and down hills and over uneven terrain, bend, stoop, climb stairs and ladders, hike nature trails, participate in active games with children, and have use of fine and gross motor skills. The ME is regularly required to sit and to work at a computer. The ME is frequently required to use hands to handle or touch objects, tools, or controls and must be able to occasionally lift and/or move heavy objects or boxes (up to 50 pounds).
