A Travel or Tour Guide leads tours for groups of visitors or tourists. Leads tours of museums or famous or historic sites, and provides visitors with details and anecdotes about the history and significance of buildings, artwork or collections. Travels with a group of tourists, plans site visits and daily itineraries, interprets languages, and shares specialized knowledge about a country or city with the group.
WonderTrek Children's Museum is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located in Baxter, Minnesota, serving Region 5, including Crow Wing, Cass, Todd, Wadena, and Morrison counties. WonderTrek is led by a dedicated Board of Directors, passionate staff, and an experienced Museum Project Director. WonderTrek is on a mission to bring back everyday play. WonderTrek's Outdoor Adventure is finally becoming a reality, set to open Fall 2026! Consisting of 9-acres of interactive exhibits, WonderTrek's Outdoor Adventure creates a place where children explore, play, and let their imaginations run wild. To further our reach, WonderTrek on Wheels brings the joy of learning through play to children and families across North Central Minnesota. From community parks to classrooms, corporate events to summer festivals, the WonderTruck and Trailer deliver hands-on fun and unforgettable adventures.
POSITION OVERVIEW
As a WonderTrek Playworker, you will help create an extraordinary experience for every child and family who visits WonderTrek. Playworkers are the heart of WonderTrek, intentionally creating welcoming environments where children feel inspired to explore, experiment, imagine, and connect through play. Rather than directing activities, Playworkers observe children's interests, thoughtfully prepare inviting spaces, and support play through meaningful interactions, open-ended questions, and responsive facilitation. Playworkers also help ensure the museum remains safe, clean, engaging, and ready for exploration throughout the day.
Responsibilities and Expectations:
The primary responsibility of a Playworker is to create engaging, safe, and meaningful play experiences for children and families at WonderTrek Outdoor Adventure. Playworkers support daily operations, facilitate programs, and provide exceptional guest service. Engage and interact with children, parents, educators, and other guests in a friendly and professional manner, fostering a positive, welcoming, and inclusive atmosphere. Support and enrich children's learning experiences by intentionally setting up materials, prompts, and overall conditions that encourage play and exploration while being available to answer questions about WonderTrek and our programmatic approach. Represent WonderTrek professionally and positively in all interactions with guests, volunteers, partners, and fellow team members. Prepare, set up, maintain, and take down programs , exhibits, and play environments for daily operations and special events. Effectively communicate with guests, team members, and program staff to ensure daily operations and special events run smoothly and provide an exceptional guest experience. Work collaboratively with team members to ensure smooth daily operations and support the overall success of WonderTrek. Stay up to date with current trends, research, and best practices in play-based learning and child development. Provide exceptional customer service to guests, responding professionally to questions, concerns, and requests. Maintain clean, safe, and organized play environments by sanitizing high-touch surfaces, organizing materials, and assisting with routine site upkeep. Collaborate with your supervisor and the Evaluation & Engagement Specialist to gather and share visitor feedback, observations, and data that support continuous improvement. Safely operate equipment and tools while following all safety procedures and completing required safety training. Identify and promptly report safety concerns, maintenance needs, or incidents to a supervisor. Monitor exhibits, play materials, and equipment to ensure they remain safe, clean, and in good working condition. Participate in ongoing training and professional development to strengthen knowledge of play, child development, and guest engagement. Arrive on time, prepared for each shift, and maintain reliable attendance. Other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications:
Previous experience working with children in a professional setting is highly desirable. Ability to engage and relate to children and their families. Ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment while maintaining a focus on safety and child supervision. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team. Ability to provide exceptional customer service in a family-focused environment. Flexibility to work a varied schedule, including weekends, evenings, and holidays. Commitment to fostering a welcoming, inclusive, and engaging environment for all guests. Enthusiasm for local outdoor recreation activities and play-based learning. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Physical stamina and the ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, and work outdoors for extended periods. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Must possess a valid driver's license. Must pass a background check.
Preferred Qualifications:
Has a passion for working with children and a background in early learning, education, nature play, or child development. Experience working with children in educational, child development, recreational, museum, environmental education settings or a related field is preferred. Loves outdoor adventures and hands-on learning. Communicates warmly and effectively with both children and adults. Prioritizes reliability and finds enjoyment in a job well done. Enjoys a dynamic work environment and is flexible with their schedule. Enjoys working in a team-based, collaborative environment while also being a self-starter able to carry out work independently.
