This is more than a skills training role; you will serve as a mentor and community leader. A portion of each Part-Time Bike and Transit Educator's typical day will be the hands-on delivery of our safety curriculum, helping students master the skills needed to bike and walk safely in Durham. Educators will also support communications, outreach, and administrative tasks associated with the youth programming, the adult & teen bike program, and transit travel training program, as needed. This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy working with people of all ages, thrive in active outdoor environments, and are committed to transportation equity. Description of Roles and Responsibilities Duties include: 1.

Instruction & Youth Mentorship Skill Building:

Support youth in learning to ride bikes and navigate streets consistent with traffic rules and safety best practices.

Course Facilitation:

Lead and assist in dynamic obstacle courses, providing clear instruction, encouragement, and constructive feedback to students.

Empowerment:

Motivate participants to see bicycling as a tool for independence and health. 2.

Logistics & Equipment Management Site Preparation:

Lead the set-up and break-down of courses, including unloading supplies, setting cones, and placing signage.

Bicycle Maintenance:

Perform basic safety checks (ABC Quick Check), adjust seat levels, and inflate tires to ensure all fleet bikes are "ready to ride."

Fitting & Safety:

Properly fit participants with helmets and conduct safety checks on students' personal equipment. 3.

Safety & Mobility Coaching Site Management:

Maintain a safe, organized environment for dynamic physical activities.

Compliance:

Distribute and collect liability waivers and ensure all school-specific safety protocols and procedures for working with minors are strictly followed.

Inclusivity:

Ensure all activities are accessible and welcoming to participants of all body types, abilities, and backgrounds.

One-on-One:

Listen to individual mobility and access needs and share information and assistance with appropriate transportation options Group setting: Present curriculum explaining transit and micro-mobility options in Durham and the Triangle region

Outreach:

Engage with individuals at meetings or community events about their mobility and access needs and our offerings for supporting them 4.

Administration Communication:

Ensure clear communication with teammates and all individuals surrounding our programming.

Task Management:

Break down work objectives into component tasks with deadlines for you and your teammates to execute.

Evaluation:

Document program outcomes.

Requirements All Ages Engagement:

A genuine interest in education and the ability to work with people from pre-K into their 80's in a calm, patient, and non-controlling manner.

Cultural Competency:

Respectful of diverse backgrounds, communication styles, and personal expression.

Reliability:

Punctuality is critical, as some of our programs run on strict schedules.

Physical Ability:

Capability to perform light to moderate lifting (loading/unloading bikes and equipment). Accommodations can be evaluated for those with physical limitations.

Background Check:

Ability to pass a Durham Public Schools criminal background check.

Language Skills:

Conversational Spanish is highly valued and reflected in the compensation scale. Worksite Location(s)/

Schedule Location:

We have programming at Durham Public Schools, community centers, and local events.

Hours:

A portion of most workdays will occur during school hours ( 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM ). Occasional evening and weekend community events.

Shift Duration:

Typically 4-6 hours per day. Total hours are expected to be between 17.5 hours and 25 hours per week.
