Job Description
The Park Danforth is seeking a Director of Human Resources to lead HR strategy and operations for our senior living community in Portland, Maine. This role is responsible for overseeing all aspects of human resources, including employee relations, compliance, talent management, and organizational development. The Director serves as a strategic partner to leadership while ensuring strong day-to-day execution across HR functions. The ideal candidate brings sound judgment, a strong foundation in employment law and employee relations, and the ability to balance operational demands with long-term organizational priorities. Position Overview The Director of Human Resources leads a two-person HR team and is accountable for delivering effective, compliant, and employee-centered HR practices across the organization. This role requires a hands-on leader who can manage a high-volume environment while also driving consistency, improving processes, and supporting leadership development. Key Responsibilities HR Operations & Compliance Oversee HR operations including payroll, benefits administration, recruitment, onboarding, and employee records Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations Develop, maintain, and update HR policies, procedures, and the employee handbook Employee Relations & Leadership Support Serve as the primary resource for employee relations matters, including investigations and conflict resolution Advise and coach department leaders on performance management, disciplinary actions, and team dynamics Partner with leadership to support a respectful, inclusive, and accountable workplace culture Talent Management & Workforce Planning Lead recruitment and retention strategies to support staffing needs across departments Oversee onboarding processes to ensure a consistent and effective employee experience Support workforce planning efforts in collaboration with leadership Organizational Development Provide leadership coaching and support to department heads Develop and deliver training programs, including leadership development initiatives Identify opportunities to improve organizational effectiveness and employee engagement Qualifications 5+ years of progressive Human Resources experience, including employee relations and compliance Experience in a multi-functional or service-based environment preferred Strong working knowledge of employment laws and HR best practices Demonstrated ability to manage both strategic initiatives and operational responsibilities Excellent communication, judgment, and problem-solving skills SHRM-CP/SCP or
PHR/SPHR
