Job Description

Position Overview The HR Generalist I supports MDI's workforce by assisting with core HR functions, including recruitment coordination, onboarding, employee relations, and policy administration, while also supporting end-to-end payroll processing under the guidance of senior HR staff to help ensure accurate and timely compensation for all employees. This role serves as a supporting point of contact for employee inquiries and partners cross-functionally to help maintain compliance with company policies and applicable employment laws. The HR Generalist I contributes to a consistent, positive employee experience while building foundational skills in HR and payroll operations that are accurate, efficient, and audit-ready.

8:30 AM - 6:00 PM EST Must maintain consistent availability during EST business hours to support development teams and client management. May occasionally assist with releases, go-lives, or client support activities outside normal hours as needed. This role may be performed remotely or in a hybrid capacity, with in-office presence as needed based on business requirements. Core Responsibilities Process biweekly or semimonthly payroll accurately and on time using Paylocity, including tax withholdings, deductions, and garnishments, escalating complex multi-state scenarios to senior payroll or HR staff as needed. Assist with maintaining payroll records and reconciling payroll data against HRIS and benefits systems to ensure accuracy. Support administration of employee benefits programs, including enrollment, changes, and vendor communication. Support full-cycle recruitment activities, including job postings, screening, interview coordination, and offer logistics. Coordinate new hire onboarding, including paperwork, systems record updates, systems access requests through IT, and orientation scheduling. Serve as a first point of contact for employee relations questions, escalating complex issues appropriately. Support employee relations situations such as conflicts, complaints, performance concerns, and accommodation or leave requests, assisting with investigations and documentation under the direction of senior HR staff. Support managers on employee situations by helping document conversations and next steps consistent with company policy, escalating coaching and corrective action recommendations to senior HR staff. Assist with maintaining and updating HR policies and the employee handbook under the guidance of senior HR staff, and help communicate changes to employees. Maintain accurate employee records in the HRIS, Intranet, Smartsheet, and ensure data integrity across Paylocity and related systems. Assist with maintaining the HR SharePoint site, keeping policies, forms, and employee resources current, accurate, and easy to find. Support compliance with employment law, SOC 2 Type II, and HIPAA requirements as they relate to employee data handling. Assist with performance management processes, including tracking review cycles and documentation. Process employee off-boarding, including final PTO payout and pay calculations, benefits termination, and exit documentation. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience. 1 to 2 years of experience in a Human Resources role, or a completed HR-related internship or coursework equivalent. Some exposure to payroll processing, through coursework, internship, or on-the-job experience, including familiarity with tax withholdings, deductions, and compliance requirements; willingness to develop full-cycle payroll skills is required. Foundational knowledge of federal, state, and local employment laws and payroll tax regulations, with a willingness to build deeper expertise on the job. Familiarity with HRIS and payroll platforms; Paylocity experience is a plus given MDI's current tech stack. Proficiency in Microsoft 365 applications, including Excel, Outlook, and Teams. Strong attention to detail and demonstrated ability to handle confidential employee data appropriately. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally across all levels of the organization. Preferred Qualifications PHR, SHRM-CP, or FPC (Fundamental Payroll Certification), or actively pursuing one. Prior experience in a B2B SaaS or technology company; insurance or risk management industry experience is a plus. Familiarity with compliance frameworks relevant to data handling, such as SOC 2 Type II or HIPAA. Experience supporting or administering identity and access systems, such as Entra ID, in coordination with IT. Experience with applicant tracking systems (ATS) and HRIS reporting functions. Measures of Success Processes payroll accurately and on time for all cycles, with zero material errors after the first 90 days. Completes new hire onboarding tasks (systems access, paperwork, orientation scheduling) within 2 business days of an employee's start date. Responds to employee HR and payroll inquiries within 1 business day. Maintains employee records and payroll documentation with zero audit findings during any internal or external compliance review. Demonstrates growing independence in recruitment coordination and benefits administration tasks by the 6-month mark, with a decreasing need for oversight as core HR and payroll processes are mastered.
Pay:
$62,952.05 - $66,204.29 per year
