Jack's Restaurant and Bar is a growing, multi-concept restaurant group operating approximately six locations throughout the Bay Area, including Jack's Restaurant and Bar and Cantina Jack's. We are seeking an experienced HR Generalist to support people operations across our multi-location, hourly workforce. This role is ideal for an HR professional who enjoys being hands-on, understands California employment practices, and can translate HR requirements into practical processes that work in a fast-paced restaurant environment. Position Summary The HR Generalist supports the full employee lifecycle across company locations, including recruiting, onboarding, payroll administration, benefits administration, compliance, employee relations, investigations, performance management, and HR operations. This position requires strong payroll knowledge and direct payroll-processing experience. The HR Generalist will work closely with restaurant management and company leadership to maintain consistent HR practices and address employee and operational needs. Regular travel between company locations is an essential function of this position. Authorized business travel and other necessary business expenses will be reimbursed in accordance with company policy and applicable law. Key Responsibilities Payroll & Wage-and-Hour Compliance Process bi-weekly payroll for company locations using Toast Payroll. Review timekeeping, wages, overtime, tips, deductions, and other payroll information for accuracy. Support compliance with applicable California wage-and-hour requirements, including meal and rest periods, overtime, minimum wage, tip practices, and applicable local ordinances. Monitor applicable local minimum wage and scheduling requirements for company locations. Maintain accurate payroll and employee records in company systems, including Toast and Restaurant365. Process authorized wage garnishments and payroll deductions. Coordinate year-end payroll activities and reporting, including W-2 preparation and reconciliation. Identify payroll or timekeeping discrepancies and work with management to resolve issues promptly. Recruiting & Onboarding Manage full-cycle recruiting for hourly and management positions across company locations. Partner with restaurant leaders to identify staffing needs and develop recruiting strategies. Maintain recruiting pipelines for high-volume front-of-house and back-of-house positions. Coordinate and administer new-hire onboarding. Ensure required employment documents, Form I-9 documentation, handbook acknowledgments, and company forms are completed and maintained appropriately. Coordinate new-hire orientation, systems access, and required training. Maintain a pipeline for high-turnover front-of-house and back-of-house positions Employee Relations & HR Compliance Serve as first point of contact for employee relations issues, escalating appropriately Investigate and document complaints, conduct issues, and workplace incidents Maintain and update the employee handbook and location-level HR policies Support managers on performance management, write-ups, and terminations Benefits & Leave Administration Administer company benefit programs in accordance with plan terms and company policies. Coordinate employee enrollment, benefit changes, and annual open enrollment. Serve as a liaison between employees, benefits brokers, insurance carriers, and other vendors. Assist with administration and tracking of applicable leaves of absence and accommodation processes, escalating complex matters as appropriate. Maintain appropriate documentation relating to benefits and leave administration. HR Operations Maintain required workplace postings and HR compliance materials across company locations. Track required employee and manager training, including California harassment-prevention and workplace safety training. Coordinate tracking of applicable food-safety certifications and other position-related certifications. Maintain accurate and confidential personnel records. Track and report HR metrics, including headcount, turnover, recruiting activity, payroll trends, and other workforce information. Partner with Operations regarding staffing, labor budgeting, scheduling practices, and workforce planning. Review HR processes and recommend improvements that increase consistency and compliance across locations. Assist with additional HR projects and responsibilities as business needs evolve. Qualifications Minimum of 3 years of HR Generalist or comparable HR experience. Experience supporting a multi-location restaurant, hospitality, retail, or similarly high-volume hourly workforce strongly preferred. Hands-on payroll-processing experience required. Toast Payroll experience strongly preferred. Working knowledge of California employment practices, including wage-and-hour requirements, meal and rest periods, overtime, payroll practices, and tip-related requirements. Experience handling employee relations matters and workplace investigations preferred. Strong organizational, communication, and documentation skills. Ability to manage confidential and sensitive employee information appropriately. Comfortable working across multiple HR, payroll, POS, and accounting systems; experience with Toast and Restaurant365 is preferred. Ability to travel regularly between company locations. Bilingual English/Spanish skills are a plus. What Success Looks Like in the First 90 Days Payroll running independently and accurately across all locations Onboarding process standardized and documented Employee handbook reviewed and current Established relationship with each location's management team Compensation & Work Hours The anticipated pay range for this position is $40.00-$45.00 per hour depending on experience. This position is classified as non-exempt and is eligible for overtime compensation in accordance with applicable California and federal law. The actual hourly rate offered within the stated range will be based on legitimate, job-related factors such as relevant experience, qualifications, skills, and demonstrated ability to perform the responsibilities of the position. Employees are expected to accurately record all hours worked and take required meal and rest periods in accordance with company policy and applicable law. Eligible employees may participate in company-sponsored benefit programs subject to the terms, conditions, eligibility requirements, and waiting periods of the applicable plans. Travel & Expense Reimbursement This position requires regular travel between company locations throughout the Bay Area. Employees will be reimbursed for necessary and authorized business-related mileage and other required business expenses in accordance with company policy and applicable California law.
