JOB SUMMARY
The Technical Trainer is responsible for training, developing, and advancing the skills and knowledge base of the Veterinary Technicians, Processing Technicians, and Husbandry Technicians. Working closely with the Training Manager, Department Managers, and Supervisors, this role delivers hands-on technical training to ensure employees possess the skills and knowledge necessary to perform their jobs safely, effectively, and in compliance with company standards and standard operating procedures (SOPs). The Technical Trainer supports a culture of continuous learning by identifying skill gaps, providing coaching, and promoting technical excellence across the organization.
DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES
Coordinate and deliver hands-on technical staff training according to SOPs based on needs identified through collaboration with the Training Manager and Department Managers and Supervisors. Complies with all regulatory guidelines as well as health and safety programs, in accordance with company policies and procedures. Conduct onboarding, orientation, and role-specific training for new technical employees. Reinforce best practices in animal care, husbandry, sanitation, processing procedures, treatments, restraint techniques, and other technical competencies. Provide real-time feedback and coaching to improve employee performance and confidence. Assess employee knowledge, skills acquisition, and technical competency through observation, testing, and practical demonstrations. Support career development initiatives by helping employees advance through established competency levels. Assist the Training Manager in the development of training materials, presentations, guides, competency assessments, and learning resources. Evaluate training effectiveness through participant feedback, field observations, and performance metrics. Maintain accurate training records, qualification documentation, and employee competency files. Ensure timely and accurate updates to training databases and learning management systems. Assist in the creation, review, revision, and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in collaboration with the Training Manager, Department Managers and Supervisors and Quality & Compliance leadership. Promote a culture of continuous learning, employee development, and operational excellence. Performs all other duties as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Minimum of five (5) years of hands-on technical laboratory animal science experience, preferably within a non-human primate environment. Demonstrated knowledge and technical expertise in animal care, husbandry practices, sanitation practices, veterinary procedures, and laboratory animal science principles. AALAS certification at Laboratory Animal Technician Level (LAT) preferred. Experience designing, developing, and delivering technical training programs preferred. Associate's degree (A.S.) or bachelor's degree (B.S.) in Animal Science, Biology, Veterinary Technology, Laboratory Animal Science, or a related scientific discipline preferred.
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES
Bilingual in English and Spanish Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. Strong adult teaching skills
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Proof of measles vaccination or updated titers prior to initial contact with animals. Current results of TB testing or be tested prior to initial contact with animals. Annual tuberculosis screening is required of all employees. Employees may occasionally need to lift and /or move up to 50 pounds. Ability to operate facility equipment. Required to wear the appropriate personal protective equipment in each area as described by SOPs. Has the ability to withstand ambient temperatures which may exceed 90°F. Personnel must be able to carry out the essential functions of this position with reasonable accommodation if disabled.
ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS
Potential exposure to disinfectants, chemicals, biologics, infectious agents (BSL1, BSL2), animal dander, and dust. Normal scientific laboratory conditions may work with hazardous materials and unpleasant odors.
