Overview:
Lost Our Home Pet Rescue is a local, nonprofit, no‑kill shelter in Tempe, Arizona, dedicated to helping pets and the people who love them during times of crisis. Our programs are rooted in the human-animal bond and include Rescue & Adoption, a 90‑day Temporary Care Program, a Pet Food Bank, a First Responder Program, and partnerships with domestic violence shelters. Our home‑like shelter cares for approximately 80 pets onsite, with an additional ~150 pets in foster homes. Make a Difference Every Day We are seeking a compassionate and reliable Part-Time Medical Assistant to join our shelter medical team working shifts weekly on Sunday and Monday. In this role, you will provide daily care, treatments, and support for shelter pets while working alongside experienced veterinary and animal care professionals. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who loves animals, enjoys hands-on work, and is eager to learn more about shelter medicine. Essential Responsibilities Provide daily care and monitoring for shelter pets. Safely handle, restrain, and transport cats and dogs for examinations, treatments, and procedures. Administer vaccines, medications, and basic treatments as directed and trained. Observe pets for signs of illness, injury, or behavioral changes and report concerns to the medical team. Support intake examinations and routine health assessments. Prepare pets for medical procedures and monitor recovery. Collect basic diagnostic samples such as fecal, urine, or blood samples as trained. Clean, disinfect, and maintain medical treatment areas, kennels, and equipment. Maintain accurate medical and treatment records. Support shelter-wide disease prevention and sanitation protocols. Collaborate with other departments and support special projects as needed. Experience Required Qualifications High school diploma or GED. Previous experience working with pets through employment, internships, boarding, veterinary or shelter environments. Comfort handling pets of various sizes, breeds, and temperaments. Strong attention to detail and willingness to follow established procedures. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a positive attitude. Preferred Qualifications Experience in a pet shelter and/or veterinary clinic. Knowledge of basic pet health and behavior. Experience administering medications to pets. Bilingual English/Spanish skills. Interest in growing a career in shelter medicine, veterinary care, or nonprofit pet services. Standard Requirements Passion for pet welfare and humane care. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Strong communication and customer service skills. Dependable attendance and punctuality. Ability to learn new skills, procedures, and software systems. Flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays as needed. Ability to remain calm and professional in emotionally challenging situations. Physical Requirements Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and lift throughout the workday. Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds independently and assist with larger pets as needed. Comfortable working around pets, cleaning products, pet waste, noise, and shelter-related odors. Ability to safely handle active, frightened, or stressed pets. Ability to perform repetitive physical tasks, including cleaning, feeding, and occasionally transporting pets. Why Join Us?
