Horse Rescue Ranch — San Diego County, California Tecate Horse Rescue is seeking a dependable, experienced horse person for a full-time, live-in Horse Care Specialist position at our nonprofit horse rescue ranch in southeast San Diego County. THR rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes at-risk horses and other equines. We currently care for a diverse herd that includes adoptable horses, senior horses, companion horses and horses participating in our equine-assisted programs. We are looking for someone who genuinely enjoys hands-on horse care and wants ranch life—not simply someone looking for a place to live.
THE POSITION
Responsibilities may include: Feeding and daily horse care Catching, haltering and leading horses Grooming Groundwork Exercising and riding appropriate horses Observing horses for illness, injury or behavioral changes Cleaning and maintaining horse areas Assisting with medications and special-care instructions when trained and directed Helping maintain an organized and safe ranch environment Working with staff and volunteers Assisting with general ranch responsibilities as needed Experience safely handling horses independently is important. Experience with rescue horses, senior horses, groundwork, riding, ranch work, trucks and horse trailers is especially valuable.
COMPENSATION
$20 per hour — Full Time THR also provides: Private RV on the ranch Generator Up to 8 gallons of gasoline per week for generator operation Up to 9 gallons of propane per month Ranch well water Accrual of up to 40 hours PTO per year

This is a remote, rural, off-grid ranch in the Tecate area of southeast San Diego County. The successful candidate must genuinely be comfortable with rural ranch life and living in the provided RV. Please carefully consider the location and living arrangement before applying. Reliable transportation is important.
PAID WORKING TRIAL
Before making a long-term commitment, qualified candidates may be invited to complete a 1-4 week paid working trial. The trial is paid at $20 per hour, up to five 8-hour workdays per week. The RV is available during the trial, and THR will provide $75 toward travel expenses for an approved working-trial candidate. The purpose of the trial is simple: we want both you and THR to have an opportunity to determine whether the horses, job, team, ranch, living arrangements and off-grid lifestyle are a good long-term fit.
