Job Description

Animal Care Specialist The Animal Care Specialist is responsible for providing daily care and maintaining a clean, safe, and enriching environment for all animals housed within the shelter. This position plays a vital role in supporting the physical and emotional well-being of shelter animals while assisting potential adopters and contributing to overall shelter operations. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Maintain clean and sanitary animal housing areas, including kennels, cages, feeding stations, and common areas. Perform daily cleaning tasks, including washing dishes, laundering bedding and towels, and sanitizing equipment. Feed and provide fresh water to animals according to established schedules and care plans. Bathe animals as needed. Provide enrichment activities that promote positive physical and mental health, including dog walking, exercise, socialization, and interaction with cats and other animals. Learn and maintain knowledge of each animal in the shelter's care, including: Name, age, breed, and identifying information Reason for admission to the shelter Behavioral observations and concerns Medical conditions and treatment plans Overall physical and emotional well-being Monitor animals daily and promptly report any changes in behavior, appetite, physical condition, or medical concerns to the Animal Care Manager. Assist potential adopters by introducing animals, answering questions, and providing accurate information regarding each animal's personality, behavior, medical history, and adoption suitability. Support the shelter's adoption efforts by creating positive experiences for visitors and helping match animals with appropriate homes. Learn and utilize Shelterluv, the animal management database, as assigned. Assist with animal intake and outcome processes, including accurate record keeping and data entry. Perform additional duties as assigned to support shelter operations. Qualifications Passion for animal welfare and commitment to providing compassionate care. Ability to safely handle animals of varying sizes, breeds, temperaments, and medical conditions. Strong observation and communication skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, bending, standing for extended periods, and walking dogs. Ability to lift 50 pounds. Basic computer skills and willingness to learn shelter management software The position will also be trained for front desk duties which include but not limited to the following: Greet visitors upon arrival, providing warm and efficient service Answer and route incoming calls, providing information about our services, adoption processes, and events Facilitate the adoption process by explaining procedures, answering questions, and processing necessary paperwork Provide general information about animals available for adoption Maintain cleanliness and organization in the reception area Work collaboratively with shelter staff and volunteers to promote a positive and productive environment Handle any customer service issues or complaints with empathy and professionalism Perform clerical duties, including data entry, filing, and maintaining accurate records Assist in the admission and discharge of animals Assist in taking and sharing information about missing animals

$13.00 - $15.00 per hour
