Job Description

Summit K9 is seeking committed, career-oriented individuals to join our team as Apprentice Dog Trainers. This is a paid, hands-on development role designed for individuals who are actively pursuing a long-term career in professional dog training and are looking to build skill, experience, and confidence in a structured, high-standard training environment. Apprentices work closely with our training team to gain real-world experience in dog handling, behavior modification, structured daycare, and client education while developing the skills required to advance into a professional trainer role. This is not a casual entry-level job. It is a development-focused position for individuals who are serious about building a career in the dog training industry.
ABOUT THE ROLE
Apprentice Dog Trainers are integrated into all aspects of Summit K9's programs, including structured enrichment daycare, Board & Train, private lessons, and group classes. In this role, you will assist with training implementation, dog handling, structured socialization, and daily care while learning how training plans are developed and executed across a variety of real-world scenarios. Apprentices receive direct mentorship from experienced trainers and are expected to actively engage in learning, observation, and hands-on practice. This role is designed to develop both technical training skill and professional capability, including communication, handling, and understanding group dynamics in structured environments.
WHAT THIS ROLE LEADS TO
Apprentice Trainers who demonstrate strong performance, reliability, and progression in skill development may advance into a Professional Dog Trainer role. Advancement is based on demonstrated competence, consistency, and the ability to independently apply training principles in real-world environments.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist with training and handling dogs in daycare, boarding, and training programs Support implementation of structured training plans under trainer direction Participate in structured social sessions and behavior development work Observe and learn client coaching during private lessons and group classes Contribute to daily care, exercise, and enrichment of enrolled dogs Maintain facility cleanliness, safety standards, and handling protocols Communicate professionally with team members and participate in team learning
THIS ROLE IS FOR
Individuals actively pursuing a career in dog training Candidates with prior experience in daycare, rescue, training, or structured dog handling environments (preferred) People who are eager to learn through hands-on experience and mentorship Those who are comfortable receiving feedback and applying it quickly in real scenarios Individuals who are serious about building skill, not just gaining exposure
THIS ROLE IS NOT FOR
Individuals seeking casual, seasonal, or short-term employment Those looking for a low-responsibility entry into animal care work Candidates who are not interested in long-term development as a trainer Individuals unwilling to work structured hours including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays
REQUIREMENTS
Prior experience working with dogs in training, daycare, boarding, or rescue environments (preferred but not strictly required if other experience is strong) Demonstrated interest in canine behavior, learning theory, or dog training Strong work ethic and willingness to learn in a structured environment Ability to safely handle dogs of all sizes and temperaments Physical ability to lift 50 lbs and perform active handling work Openness to learning a variety of training tools and methods within a structured system Reliability and willingness to work variable hours based on program needs
COMPENSATION & SCHEDULE
Paid hourly position (rate based on experience and skill level) Opportunities for pay progression as skills develop Part-time and full-time positions available (20-40 hours/week) Must be available for early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by services
