  • 100 HWY 83, Evergreen, AL Job Type Full-Time Job Number 08615 College/Division RSTC-209300-Cosmetology Opening Date 09/21/2026 Closing Date 10/9/2026 1:00 PM Central Campus Location Reid State Technical College Position Summary The Cosmetology Instructor provides instructional services in accordance with approved Alabama Community College System (ACCS) curriculum, Plans of Instruction, College requirements, and applicable Alabama cosmetology laws, rules, licensure standards, and safety expectations.
The instructor is responsible for planning, organizing, presenting, supervising, and evaluating classroom, laboratory, and salon-based learning experiences; advising and supporting students; maintaining required instructional and licensure-related records; participating in program assessment and continuous improvement; assisting with recruitment and placement; and contributing to the overall mission of Reid State Community College. Assignments may include day, evening, weekend, online, dual enrollment, off-campus, and/or other approved instructional locations as assigned. This position is a full-time faculty appointment. Faculty load, direct student contact hours, office hours, advising, planning, and institutional duties will be assigned in accordance with applicable ACCS faculty-load procedures and College policy. A full-time instructor normally carries 15-16 credit hours or the equivalent in fall and spring. When contact hours are used, assigned direct student contact hours are determined under the applicable ACCS equivalency provisions. Full-time faculty maintain a minimum 35-hour work week, exclusive of lunch and regularly scheduled breaks. Summer employment may be available based on enrollment and institutional need. Essential Duties and Responsibilities 1. Plan, organize, and teach assigned Cosmetology courses and related laboratory/salon experiences in the day, evening, weekend, online, dual enrollment, off-campus, or other approved formats and locations as assigned. 2. Maintain current professional competence in Cosmetology and maintain all licenses, instructor credentials, certifications, and other professional qualifications required for the assignment throughout employment. 3. Teach assigned courses in accordance with approved ACCS course descriptions and Plans of Instruction, College curriculum requirements, program outcomes, course syllabi, and applicable state licensure standards. 4. Prepare, submit, and maintain an accurate syllabus and supporting course notebook/documentation for each assigned course and review course requirements, evaluation procedures, attendance expectations, safety rules, sanitation standards, and professional conduct expectations with students. 5. Provide effective classroom, laboratory, and salon-based instruction and maintain supervisory responsibility for students during assigned instructional hours and activities. 6. Teach, model, and enforce safe salon practices, sanitation and infection-control procedures, proper chemical handling, personal protective practices, and other requirements applicable to Cosmetology instruction and services. 7. Maintain classrooms, laboratories, salon areas, instructional equipment, tools, inventories, chemicals, consumable supplies, and learning spaces in a clean, safe, orderly, and instructionally ready condition. 8. Use Canvas or the College-designated learning management system and other approved instructional technologies for course content, communication, student support, grade reporting, and instructional documentation. 9. Maintain accurate and complete attendance, grade, skill/competency, assessment, and other required student records and submit them according to established College and program deadlines. 10. Evaluate and record student performance and achievement in a timely, fair, and consistent manner; provide prompt feedback; and document student progress toward course, program, and licensure-related competencies. 11. Submit attendance verification, early alerts, failure-to-report, unofficial withdrawal, and other required student-progress documentation in accordance with College procedures. 12. Ensure assigned classes, laboratory/salon sessions, final examinations, and practical assessments are held as scheduled unless an approved change has been authorized. 13. Post and maintain appropriate office hours and provide timely instructional counseling, academic and career advising, and referrals to student-support services. 14. Advise students regarding plans of study, course scheduling, registration, program progression, licensure preparation, career opportunities, employment preparation, and completion requirements. 15. Participate in curriculum development and review, program assessment, student-learning-outcomes activities, advisory committee work, and continuous-improvement efforts with the Division Chair and other faculty. 16. Maintain contacts with local salons, cosmetology professionals, employers, schools, and industry partners, including documenting at least two business/industry visits or equivalent employer-engagement activities each academic term unless otherwise directed by the College. 17. Assist with student recruitment, retention, completion, and placement activities, including high-school visits, community events, college fairs, job fairs, open houses, and distribution of approved recruitment materials. 18. Recommend textbooks, digital resources, instructional materials, library/media resources, salon equipment, tools, chemicals, supplies, and instructional technology through established College procedures. 19. Assist the Division Chair with departmental budget planning, equipment and supply needs, inventory control, grant-supported purchases, and resource prioritization as requested. 20. Participate in program advisory committees, licensure and compliance activities, program reviews, credential reporting, Perkins or other grant documentation, and institutional effectiveness activities as applicable. 21. Assist the Division Chair in identifying qualified adjunct, substitute, or laboratory personnel when requested and support their orientation to program expectations. 22. Attend faculty meetings, professional development, workshops, orientation, commencement, division/college committees, campus activities, and other meetings or assignments as required. 23. Submit and maintain a Professional Growth Plan, when applicable, in accordance with ACCS Board of Trustees Policy 605.02 and College procedures for professional development and advancement in rank. 24. Maintain familiarity with and comply with College policies and procedures, ACCS requirements, applicable cosmetology laws and rules, accessibility expectations, and all relevant federal, state, and local requirements. 25. Demonstrate effective written and oral communication, professional conduct, ethical behavior, integrity, collegiality, loyalty to institutional responsibilities, and an industry-appropriate work ethic in interactions with students, employees, employers, clients, and the public. 26. Maintain a safe, respectful, student-centered learning environment and promptly report safety hazards, injuries, equipment concerns, or other issues through established College procedures. 27. Perform other duties consistent with the position as assigned by the Career Technical Education Division Chair, Dean of Instruction, President, or designee. Qualifications Applicants must meet the program-specific minimum qualifications below and must satisfy the ACCS faculty qualification requirements applicable to the credit courses assigned to the position.
EDUCATION AND OCCUPATIONAL EXPERIENCE A
diploma, certificate, or other postsecondary credential in Cosmetology from an accredited institution is required. Three (3) years of successful full-time experience in the cosmetology field is required.
LICENSURE / INSTRUCTOR CREDENTIALS A
current Alabama cosmetology license in good standing is required. A current Alabama Cosmetology Instructor license in good standing is required. The employee must maintain all required professional and instructor licenses in active good standing throughout employment.
ADDITIONAL REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Ability to work effectively with students at varying skill and academic levels in classroom, laboratory, salon, and individualized instructional settings. Ability to safely supervise students and demonstrate or oversee cosmetology tools, equipment, chemicals, sanitation procedures, salon services, and instructional technologies used in the program. Effective oral and written communication skills are required. Ability to work independently and collaboratively and to deal effectively with students, employees, employers, clients, and the public is required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS A
bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is preferred. Successful teaching or training experience in cosmetology is preferred. Postsecondary or secondary career technical teaching experience is preferred. Experience with Canvas LMS or a comparable learning management system and current instructional technologies is preferred. Experience with program assessment, advisory committees, licensure compliance, industry partnerships, student credential attainment, or work-based learning is preferred.
