Contracted Hair Stylist / Salon Operator Position Summary The Contracted Hair Stylist / Salon Operator provides professional hair care and salon services to residents of our Assisted Living and Memory Care community. The stylist operates as an independent contractor and rents designated salon space within the community. The ideal individual is professional, dependable, compassionate, and comfortable working with older adults, including individuals living with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. The stylist is expected to provide services in a manner that promotes resident dignity, choice, comfort, safety, and independence. Essential Responsibilities Provide professional salon services to residents, which may include haircuts, shampoos, styling, blow-drying, coloring, perms, and other services within the stylist's professional license and scope of practice. Provide services with patience, kindness, and respect for each resident's individual preferences and abilities. Communicate appropriately with residents who may have cognitive impairment, hearing loss, communication difficulties, or other age-related needs. Maintain a calm, welcoming, and comfortable salon environment. Maintain the salon in a clean, sanitary, organized, and professional condition. Properly clean and disinfect equipment, tools, work surfaces, and salon areas in accordance with applicable licensing and infection-control requirements. Follow all applicable state cosmetology/barbering regulations and maintain all licenses required to provide services. Provide and maintain appropriate salon supplies, products, tools, and equipment as established in the salon rental/contract agreement. Maintain appropriate scheduling and communicate with residents, families, and community staff as necessary regarding appointments. Maintain appropriate records of services and collect payment for services in accordance with the contracted salon arrangement. Maintain resident privacy and confidentiality and refrain from discussing residents or their personal information with unauthorized individuals. Immediately communicate any resident safety concern, suspected abuse or neglect, injury, unusual change in condition, or other significant concern to the appropriate community staff member. Follow community safety, emergency, infection-control, and security procedures while on the premises. Follow all community requirements related to entering resident apartments and secured Memory Care areas. Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with residents, families, visitors, and staff. Treat all residents with dignity and respect and support a positive resident experience. Memory Care Expectations When providing services to residents living in Memory Care, the stylist must demonstrate patience and an understanding that residents may experience confusion, anxiety, difficulty communicating, resistance to care, or changes in behavior. The stylist will work cooperatively with Memory Care staff when a resident requires additional reassurance, redirection, or assistance. The stylist should not physically force or pressure a resident to receive a salon service when the resident is demonstrating distress or refusing the service. Community staff should be contacted for assistance when there are concerns about a resident's ability or willingness to participate safely. The stylist must follow all community procedures regarding secured Memory Care entrances and exits and must never allow a resident to leave a secured area without authorization from community staff. Independent Contractor / Salon Rental Relationship This position is a contracted arrangement and is not an employee position with the community. The stylist is responsible for operating their own business and for all responsibilities associated with that business, including applicable taxes, insurance, professional licensing, and other legal or regulatory requirements. The stylist will pay the agreed-upon salon rental fee in accordance with the salon rental or independent contractor agreement. The stylist is responsible for establishing and collecting fees for salon services as outlined in the agreement with the community. Specific expectations regarding salon hours, supplies, equipment, utilities, scheduling, payment collection, access to the community, and use of the salon will be governed by the separate salon rental/contract agreement. Qualifications Current cosmetology or hairdressing license as required by the State of Maine. License must remain active and in good standing throughout the contracted relationship. Experience providing salon services to older adults is preferred. Experience working with individuals living with dementia or other cognitive impairments is strongly preferred. Ability to communicate respectfully and effectively with residents, families, and community staff. Ability to work independently while maintaining a cooperative relationship with community leadership and staff. Reliable, professional, patient, and compassionate demeanor. Ability to meet any background screening, health, infection-control, orientation, or other requirements established by the community or applicable regulations. Physical Requirements The stylist must be able to perform the physical functions normally associated with professional salon services, including prolonged standing, bending, reaching, and using salon equipment. The stylist must be able to safely assist residents within the scope of the stylist's role and request assistance from community staff when a resident requires mobility, transfer, or personal-care assistance. Professional Standards The stylist is expected to maintain a professional appearance and conduct themselves in a manner consistent with the standards of the community while on the premises. The stylist is an important part of the resident experience. Salon services should promote dignity, self-esteem, social engagement, personal choice, and quality of life for residents of both Assisted Living and Memory Care.
