The ideal candidate for this position has a background in pillow or upholstery production. We are an online shop ( www.urbantroos.com ) that sells pillow cushion covers made from African mud cloth and imported cotton fabrics. He or she will be responsible for cutting fabric and sewing pillows to specific measurements and designs. Candidates for this position must have a strong background in sewing and be able to come to our business office once a week to cut fabric. The sewing of the pillows can be done at the candidates desired location. The expectation is a one week turnaround of approximately 75-100 pillows. Compensation is paid by the finished piece. An experienced seamstress should be capable of making a minimum of 3-4 pillows per hour and earn much higher compensation than the industry average of $13-14/hour. We pay $9.50 per pillow.
Responsibilities:
Experience sewing mud cloth, upholstery, or other heavyweight woven fabrics Accurate measuring, marking and cutting Strong straight-stitch sewing skills with consistent seam allowances Experience installing zippers in pillow covers Ability to properly square fabric and align patterns/designs Experience handling multiple layers of heavyweight fabric Knowledge of proper needle, thread, stitch length and tension settings Ability to professionally finish raw edges to prevent fraying Experience operating a serger/overlock machine Strong attention to detail and quality workmanship

Important:
A standard lightweight household sewing machine and basic domestic serger are not sufficient. Equipment must be heavy-duty or industrial-grade and capable of producing consistent, professional-quality results with mud cloth. Applicants should be comfortable completing throw pillows from cutting through final construction and finishing.
