Sewing Instructor for Youth Backstage Performing Arts Utah West Bountiful, UT Job Details Part-time From $18 an hour 12 hours ago Qualifications Machine operation Machine troubleshooting Stitching Equipment troubleshooting Experience working with children Garment sewing Working with youth Full Job Description Overview The Sewing Instructor provides engaging, hands-on sewing instruction for children and teens at Backstage Performing Arts. This position introduces students to sewing in a safe, positive, and encouraging environment while helping them develop practical sewing skills, creativity, confidence, and independence. The ideal candidate has strong foundational sewing skills, enjoys working with young people, and can break sewing techniques into clear, age-appropriate instruction. Responsibilities Teach scheduled youth sewing classes, workshops, camps, and other sewing programs offered through Backstage Performing Arts. Follow curriculum, lesson plans, and project guidelines while adapting instruction to the needs of individual students. Teach foundational skills, including sewing machine operation, cutting, pinning, seam allowances, pressing, construction techniques, and basic pattern reading. Demonstrate the safe and proper use of sewing machines, irons, scissors, pins, rotary cutters, and other classroom equipment. Provide hands-on assistance while encouraging students to develop independence and problem-solving skills. Help students troubleshoot sewing machines and correct construction mistakes. Maintain a positive, welcoming classroom where students feel comfortable learning, experimenting, and making mistakes. Manage student behavior and maintain appropriate classroom expectations. Prepare sewing machines, tools, supplies, samples, and other materials before class. Maintain a clean and organized sewing space before, during, and after instruction. Monitor student progress and communicate concerns to Backstage leadership as needed. Follow all Backstage Performing Arts policies regarding student safety, behavior, communication, and emergency procedures. Requirements Strong foundational sewing skills. Confidence operating and troubleshooting a domestic sewing machine. Understanding of basic sewing and construction techniques. Ability to clearly demonstrate and explain sewing skills to beginning students. Patient, encouraging, and comfortable working with children and teens. Dependable and able to manage a classroom environment. Ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries with students. Willingness to complete required background screening and training. Preferred Previous teaching, coaching, childcare, sewing, fashion, costuming, or theatre experience. Experience working with groups of children or teens. Experience reading commercial sewing patterns. Garment construction experience. Costume construction, alterations, or theatrical sewing experience. Physical Requirements This position requires the ability to move throughout the classroom, bend or kneel to assist students at sewing stations, operate sewing and pressing equipment, and occasionally lift or move sewing machines, fabric, supplies, and classroom materials. Instructor Expectations Youth Sewing Instructors are expected to: Encourage progress rather than perfection. Help students develop confidence in their own abilities. Encourage students to problem-solve before completing tasks for them. Treat mistakes as a natural part of learning. Model patience, kindness, creativity, and professionalism. Maintain a safe and respectful environment for every student. Represent Backstage Performing Arts professionally when interacting with students and families.
