This is a hands-on shelter medicine role providing medical and surgical support for animals throughout their time at RCHS. We're looking for someone with strong clinical skills who can step into a busy shelter environment and work confidently alongside our Medical team. Shelter medicine is different from private practice. Our team works closely with Animal Care, Adoption, Foster and Behavior and cares for animals with a wide variety of medical and behavioral needs. This position will begin part-time, up to 28 hours per week, with the potential to transition to full-time after an initial training and orientation period based on departmental needs and mutual fit. Responsibilities Provide hands-on medical care, treatments and monitoring for shelter animals under veterinary direction Safely handle and restrain dogs, cats, rabbits and other shelter animals Perform venipuncture, collect and process diagnostic samples, and assist with laboratory testing Place IV catheters and administer medications, fluids, injections and treatments as permitted by licensure/experience and under veterinary direction Prepare patients and equipment for surgery and assist throughout surgical procedures Monitor anesthesia and patient recovery within applicable scope of practice Assist with dental procedures, dental radiography and related patient care within applicable scope of practice Perform or assist with diagnostic radiography Triage medical concerns and recognize and communicate changes in patient condition Maintain accurate medical records and documentation Clean, sterilize and maintain surgical, medical and treatment areas and equipment Assist with inventory, supplies and disease-control protocols Provide routine care including feeding, cleaning, grooming and other hands-on animal care as needed Work collaboratively with Medical, Animal Care, Adoption, Foster and Behavior teams Assist with humane euthanasia and compassionate end-of-life care Support foster medical needs and other shelter medical responsibilities as needed Experience & Qualifications We're open to two types of experienced candidates: Registered Veterinary Technician Current California RVT license Strong hands-on clinical skills, including animal handling, patient care, treatments and procedure support Shelter medicine, high-volume surgery or similar experience strongly preferred Experienced Veterinary Assistant Significant professional veterinary experience with demonstrated advanced technical skills Comfortable with venipuncture, patient restraint, surgical support, diagnostic testing and other hands-on clinical responsibilities appropriate to experience and supervision Shelter, high-volume, emergency or similar veterinary experience strongly preferred For either background, we're looking for someone who: Works confidently and efficiently in a fast-paced medical environment Has strong animal handling and observation skills Can prioritize changing patient needs and communicate concerns appropriately Is comfortable with both skilled medical work and the cleaning, stocking and routine animal-care work that comes with shelter medicine Communicates and collaborates well across teams Comfortable working with animals experiencing illness, injury, stress and behavioral challenges Compassionately assist with humane euthanasia and end-of-life care Communicates effectively and works collaboratively with veterinary, animal care, community, volunteer, and shelter teams
