Job Description
We are looking for a passionate, detail-oriented, team-player to join our small animal practice located in Merrillville. What can we offer you? General Duties:
Performs opening and closing procedures pursuant to checklists. Performs daily cleaning of kennels, cages, and public areas, following proper disease control protocol to ensure a sterile environment. Feed all boarding and hospitalized animals the correct diet, amount, and at the correct times. Walk all boarding animals based on their specific needs (i.e. off leash, on leash, aggression levels) and monitor their activity outside. Report accurately on pet's general behavior, bathroom activity, and any health concerns. Report all health concerns to the Veterinarian and in the medical record. Administer oral medications to boarding and hospitalized animals and record in the medical record. Displays appropriate restraint techniques for all size and age canine and feline patients. Appropriately draw up vaccinations and medications in the correct vessel following Veterinary instruction. Administer subcutaneous vaccinations, medications, and fluids following Veterinarian instruction. Administer intramuscular and intravenous medications as directed by the Veterinarian. Bathe boarding and hospitalized patients as needed and before they go home choosing the appropriate shampoo for each patient. Bath includes nail trim, dryer, and quick brush out. Draw blood from the jugular, cephalic, and saphenous veins (lateral in dogs and medial in cats). Performs in house lab testing including CBC, chemistry panels, T4, fructosamine, urinalysis, and radiographs and the required maintenance for the lab machines. Correctly fills out outside lab forms to ensure adequate tests are performed at the appropriate cost. Place intravenous catheters in the cephalic and saphenous veins (medial in cats only). Set up surgery, prepare surgical patients, clean surgical laundry, clean and sterilize surgical packs, and clean/sterilize surgery daily. Immediately cleans up urine, feces, vomit, hair, and other patient debris as indicated. Stock all rooms, treatment, pharmacy, and kennel daily. Clean, fold, and stock kennel laundry throughout the clinic. Keeps trash receptacles empty and clean. Assist the Veterinarian as neededClient-Interaction Duties:
Cordially greets arriving clients and patients and addresses them by name whenever possible. Addresses clients as Mr., Mrs., Ms., or Dr. Observes clients and offers assistance whenever possible, such as helping with children, assisting clients to vehicle, carrying dog food or pet carriers. Understands and explains services and products with knowledge and confidence, including vaccinations, diagnostics, preventatives, and treatments. . Answers telephone calls in friendly and professional manner, quickly and efficiently. Places clients on hold until the Receptionist can provide assistance. Provides accurate information and directions regarding pre-appointment and pre-surgical arrival. Knows fees and quotes procedures accurately. Seeks assistance of attending technician or doctor or manager if unsure. Ensures proper dispensation of pet food, medications, and supplies. Seeks assistance of attending Veterinarian or Practice Manager if unsure. Provides clients with discharge instructions, certificates, and other paperwork as dictated by case type and Veterinarian instructions.Veterinarian/Technician/ Support Duties:
Seeks the assistance of veterinarians or technicians immediately when assessing critical patients. Assists with managing patient transport at admittance and discharge, as needed. Notifies doctors and technicians of urgent client questions and messages regarding medical issues. Sets up fecals, ear swab cytologies, and urine sediment as instructed by the Veterinarian.Medical Record Duties:
Accurately records history and objective findings, including weight and temperature, for every patient. Accurately records information about clients and patients, such as correct name spellings, client phone numbers, contact preferences and times, e-mail addresses, and patient weights, ages, breeds and gender (female, female-spayed, male, male-neutered).Financial Duties:
Explain estimates in detail and advises clients of payment options and credit policies. Is well-versed in Care Credit and Scratchpay options.Weekend Kennel Duties:
All Veterinary Assistants are required to share weekend/holiday kennel shifts on a rotating schedule, with a minimum of two shifts per month.Special Duties:
Veterinary Assistants that demonstrate all of the key competencies, master their general duties, and express interest or superior ability in a specific area may be given special duties by the Practice Manager or Owner. These special duties may or may not come with an increase in compensation.Education and Experience Requirements:
High school diploma required Minimum 3 year experience working in a veterinary hospitalJob Type:
