This person works with our veterinary nurse team, veterinarians, animal care assistants, and receptionists in all duties of the hospital. They are required to assist the veterinarians to the fullest possible extent, to help improve the quality of care given to patients, and to aid the veterinarians in achieving greater efficiency by relieving them of technical work and administrative detail. The responsibilities vary with the current needs of the hospital staff, the season of the year, and the individual abilities demonstrated by the employee. Primary Job Responsibilities:
  • Adheres to all hospital policies as outlined in the Indian Hills Animal Clinic standards manual.
  • Attend & participate in monthly mandatory staff meetings as scheduled.
  • Provide safe and effective restraint of pets for examination and treatment by veterinarian.
  • Handle and dispense all forms of medications including but not limited to injections, oral medications, controlled substances and topical medications.
  • Be comfortable handling cats and have the ability to walk and maintain control of dogs up to 150lbs.
  • Perform basic diagnostic tests on patients including but not limited to radiographs, in-house laboratory tests and ophthalmic tests.
  • Perform preventative care procedures including but not limited to vaccinations, nail trims, anal gland expressions and wound cleaning.
  • Perform treatments on hospitalized pets as directed by the veterinarian.
  • Administer medications as directed by veterinarian or owner (if boarding).
  • Obtain and properly handle specimens & clean up pet waste (blood, urine, stool, vomit & diarrhea).
  • Monitor, document & report all pets normal & abnormal activities while also ensuring they are being kept clean and comfortable.
  • Clean and sanitize kennels & runs and maintain strict level of cleanliness throughout entire hospital.
  • Obtain medical history and brief triage for appointments.
  • Assist in developing medical estimates and professionally communicate with clients.
  • Perform basic clerical work including, but not limited to client recalls, laboratory calls, and upkeep of all logs in accordance with AAHA, DEA and IHAC standards.
  • Ability to answer common animal health questions with a general medical knowledge, proper spelling and meaning of commonly used terminology of veterinary medicine.
  • Maintain client & patient medical records as outlined in the Indian Hills Animal Clinic standards manual and in accordance with AAHA standards.
  • Perform maintenance and upkeep of all medical & diagnostic equipment.
  • Maintain adequate supplies in all areas of the hospital.
  • Basic inventory management (receiving, stocking, storing, logging usage)
  • Answer phones and assist or direct callers as necessary.
  • Schedule appointments and reservations for all services offered at Indian Hills Animal Clinic.
  • Professionally explain all services and products provided at the hospital.
  • Directs entire hospital traffic and client flow.
  • Knowledge of the spelling and meaning of commonly used terminology of veterinary medicine.
Personal Requirements:
  • Basic computer knowledge and experience with relevant software applications including MS Office (Word, Excel)
  • Be confident and comfortable treating, handling & restraining dogs and cats of all sizes and temperaments.
  • Be efficient, very pleasant, courteous, polite, concerned and helpful to all clients & pets under all conditions and at all times.
  • Intelligence, self-confidence and positive energy.
  • Sufficiently adapt to operate effectively in different roles with a variety of people within and outside the hospital.
  • Possess good judgment and the willingness and capability for making decisions.
  • Must be interested in contributing to the Indian Hills Animal Clinic's success and growth.
  • The ability to work independently on assigned tasks as well as to accept direction on given assignments.
  • The ability to work well with all employees.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Possess exceptional interpersonal communication skills.

Controls over work:
The nurse works under the direct and indirect supervision of the doctor team as outlined in the Indian Hills Animal Clinic Standards Manual. Completed work is reviewed for accuracy and compliance with established procedures. Deviations or unfamiliar situations are referred to the doctor on duty or a member of the management team.
Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to hazards associated with aggressive patients; hazards associated with infected animals and controlled substances; exposure to unpleasant odors and noises; exposure to bites, scratches and animal wastes; possible exposure to contagious disease. They are also in direct contact with clients during many emotional times including, but not limited to joys, fears, sadness and anger. Education and/or
Experience:
The applicant should possess a High School diploma or general education degree (GED) and 2 years+ of related experience and/or training required. RVT, preferred.
Physical Requirements:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; talk loud enough to be heard, and routinely stoop or kneel. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee must routinely lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust and focus.
