Job Description
Overview We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Veterinary Assistant to join our dynamic veterinary team. The ideal candidate will possess a strong passion for animal welfare, excellent animal handling skills, and a comprehensive understanding of veterinary procedures. As a Veterinary Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting veterinarians and veterinary technicians by providing exceptional care and assistance across various clinical and administrative tasks. This paid position offers an opportunity to develop your expertise in animal health and welfare within a professional veterinary environment. Responsibilities Assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians during examinations, surgeries, and treatments by preparing equipment, restraining animals, and monitoring patient vital signs. Provide compassionate animal handling and restraint to ensure safety for both animals and staff during procedures. Perform routine animal husbandry tasks including feeding, cleaning enclosures, grooming, and administering medications under supervision. Support surgical procedures through aseptic technique, IV insertion, catheterization, and maintaining sterile environments. Maintain detailed record keeping of patient histories, treatments, medication administration, and procedural documentation. Ensure the cleanliness of the clinic by sanitizing treatment areas, kennels, surgical instruments, and equipment in compliance with health standards. Communicate effectively with pet owners regarding pet care instructions, medication schedules, and follow-up appointments to promote animal welfare. Adhere strictly to personal protective equipment (PPE) protocols to maintain safety standards within the clinic environment. Assist with front desk duties such as appointment scheduling, client communication, and managing patient records when needed. Support emergency critical care cases by providing timely assistance under supervision while maintaining focus on animal welfare. Experience Prior kennel experience or animal shelter work demonstrating animal handling proficiency. Experience working as a veterinary technician or assistant in a clinical setting is highly desirable. Knowledge of veterinary terminology, anatomy, physiology, and aseptic techniques is essential. Hands-on experience with pet care routines including medication administration and basic surgical support. Familiarity with equine handling or large animal care is advantageous but not mandatory. Demonstrated ability to perform cleaning duties efficiently while maintaining high standards of hygiene. Strong record keeping skills coupled with excellent client communication abilities are preferred.
