Adoption Counselor Sioux Falls Area Humane Society (SFAHS) Full-Time & Part-Time Opportunities Available Position Summary The Adoption Counselor serves as a key representative of the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society by helping match animals with loving, responsible homes while providing excellent customer service. This role supports adoptions, animal intake and release services, record keeping, community education, and the humane treatment of all animals. Essential Responsibilities Adoption & Customer Service Assist adopters through the adoption process and help match pets with appropriate homes. Review applications, prepare adoption paperwork, and educate adopters on responsible pet ownership. Greet visitors, answer phones, and respond to animal-related questions. Provide information on shelter services, adoptions, lost and found pets, and available resources. Conduct post-adoption follow-up as needed. Animal Intake & Care Assist with incoming animals, including strays, owner surrenders, and returns. Process animals for adoption, including verifying medical and vaccination records. Support basic animal care, handling, and medication administration as directed. Administrative & Facility Support Maintain accurate adoption, intake, and release records. Perform data entry, filing, invoice coding, payment processing, and receipt generation. Maintain adoption packets, lost and found records, and pet care information files. Assist with retail sales and maintain a clean, organized work environment. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required. Six months to one year of experience in customer service, animal care, veterinary services, retail, or administrative support preferred. Strong communication, customer service, organizational, and computer skills. Knowledge of animal behavior and responsible pet ownership is preferred. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. Physical Requirements Ability to work safely with animals of various sizes and temperaments. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally. Frequent standing, walking, reaching, bending, and animal handling. Comfortable working in an environment with animal noise, odors, allergens, and occasional exposure to sick or injured animals. Schedule & Work Environment Primarily indoor work with occasional outdoor duties. Flexible schedule required, including weekends and holidays.
