PREVIOUS VETERINARY HOSPITAL EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

As a Veterinary Assistant, you will work with and provide backup to the Lead Technician/Clinic Manager and Veterinarian. You will be responsible for the flow and care of animals in the surgery area, monitoring of anesthesia and recovery, tools and equipment, pre and post-operative care of animals while in the surgical suite, and surgery recovery. You will use your veterinary knowledge to ensure that the assigned clinic operations are performed to the highest standards and quality of care, be responsive to the veterinarian and animals at all times, and provide updates to the team to ensure smooth operations and optimum animal care and service delivery throughout the day. The Judy and Doug Lowrie Spay and Neuter Clinic is a low cost, high volume and high quality spay and neuter clinic located at the Washington County Johnson City Animal Shelter. Our goal is to provide spay and neuter services to the Animal Shelter, the general public, and our local rescues. Pay range is $15 - $16 per hour. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Along with the basic duties of the vet assistant other essential and important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. Maintain the organization and flow of patients by maintaining professional, efficient, and exceptional organizational skills with the staff throughout the day 2. Responsible for the efficient admission of all surgical patients, making sure that all clinic procedures are followed 3. Responsible to make sure that all medical records are updated per the veterinarian's instructions 4. All premeds and induction meds for canines and feline patients are drawn correctly, all premeds and induction meds are administered timely and correctly 5. All animals are prepped correctly for surgery 6. All animals are properly monitored while in the surgical area for both pre and post-operative care 7. Assist with all emergency procedures following protocol and veterinarian instructions 8. You will ensure the safety of our pets, clients, and team members by utilizing safe restraining techniques, following standard protocols 9. You are responsible for maintaining a clean, sterile, and organized surgical suite and treatment area, at all times and ensuring the surgical suite is deep cleaned regularly 10. You will be responsible for reviewing the duty checklist on a daily basis to be sure that all items have been completed and assign staff as needed 11. You will be responsible for making sure all surgical materials i.e. drapes and instruments for the next workday are prepared, maintaining the anesthesia machine i.e. filling with isoflurane, changing F/air, and soda sorb, and logged accordingly. 12. You will monitor equipment and the supplies used in the surgery suite. Provide inventory and repair notifications to the lead tech and clinic manager to ensure the daily operations in the surgical suite. Animal Handling 1. Will be asked to handle (on average) 30 dogs and cats per day 2. Must be able to learn characteristics of animal behavior (for example: be able to identify aggressive or fearful behavior) 3. Must be able to use appropriate safety equipment for fractious or feral animals - the use of safety equipment is mandatory 4. Must possess excellent reflexes 5. Should be able to identify own limitations and be willing to ask for help 6. Must become proficient at animal restraint and
