Job Description and Requirements:

The Animal Technician supports biomedical research programs by providing daily care, monitoring, sanitation, and husbandry services for laboratory animals, including rodents and other research species. This position is responsible for ensuring animals receive appropriate food, water, housing, and daily observation while maintaining animal housing areas and equipment according to established procedures and applicable regulatory standards. The ideal candidate has previous animal care or laboratory animal experience and is comfortable working independently in a highly regulated research environment.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide daily care and husbandry for laboratory animals, including rodents and other research species
• Monitor animals for health or behavioral concerns and promptly communicate findings to veterinary, research, or compliance personnel
• Change animal cages, racks, bedding, food, and water according to established procedures
• Maintain animal housing areas, equipment, and workspaces according to sanitation and regulatory standards
• Operate cage washers and related sanitation equipment
• Utilize autoclaves for sterilization of cages and equipment as required
• Follow established procedures for disinfection, sanitation, and use of cleaning agents
• Maintain accurate records including animal health surveillance, feed logs, temperature and humidity charts, animal receipt and disposition records, and other required documentation
• Scan cage barcodes and utilize electronic systems for animal health and operational documentation
• Support animal receiving and disposition processes
• Identify animal care, facility, or regulatory concerns and immediately report or address issues according to established procedures
• Perform technical procedures within the scope of training to support laboratory animal care and research activities
• Follow applicable federal, state, institutional, and research animal care regulations
• Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow established safety procedures

Job Requirements:

• High School Diploma or GED required
• Minimum 1 year of animal handling or laboratory animal sanitation equipment experience required
• Previous animal care experience appropriate to the species supported
• General knowledge of feeding, housing, caging, and space requirements for laboratory animals
• Ability to recognize and communicate potential animal health concerns
• Knowledge of cleaning, disinfection, and sanitation practices
• Experience using cage washers and/or autoclaves for animal care equipment preferred
• Basic computer and email proficiency
• Ability to maintain clear, accurate, and legible records
• Ability to follow detailed procedures and work independently or collaboratively
• Ability to comply with laboratory animal care, safety, and regulatory requirements

Education & Experience:

Candidates should meet one of the following:

• High School Diploma/GED, training equivalent to AALAS Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification, and at least 1 year of animal care experience OR
• High School Diploma/GED and at least 2 years of relevant animal care experience OR
• An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience demonstrating the knowledge and abilities necessary for the position

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and work on hard surfaces for up to 7 hours per day
• Ability to safely lift and move loads weighing up to 50 pounds
• Ability to push and pull heavy equipment and materials
• Ability to wear required PPE, including protective clothing, safety glasses, safety shoes, gloves, masks, and respirators when assigned Requirements (due at time of phone screen with recruiter):
• Resume with last seven years of work history if applicable - all work history gaps of 90+ days must be explained
