Job Description

A unique opportunity has opened up to join a growing veterinary behavior department at our emergency/specialty veterinary practice. At Central Hospital for Veterinary Medicine, multiple specialty and emergency services work together to provide state of the art compassionate care. Our work culture supports the emotional well-being of patients, clients, and team members. The behavior department sees canine, feline, and avian patients in our Guilford, CT location. There may be upcoming opportunities to see equine patients on farm calls. This is a full-time position, Monday - Thursday 8a-6p in our Guilford, CT hospital. Our behavior technician's role includes:
  • Collecting behavioral histories
  • Setting up for each patient appointment
  • Keeping the flow of appointments moving smoothly
  • Recording behavioral observations during each appointment
  • Assisting during physical examinations using low stress handling techniques
  • Demonstrating behavior modification techniques (depending on experience)
  • Record keeping
  • Scheduling appointments
  • Answering client emails and calls
  • Calling in prescriptions
  • Communicating with clients frequently to monitor patient progress
  • Independently conducting training/behavior modification appointments (depending on experience)
  • Discussing and implementing ideas to enhance the wellbeing of our patients and the behavior department as a whole.

  • A passion for animal behavior and treatment of behavior problems
  • An empathetic, patient, and kind attitude toward both clients and patients
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • A self-starter who can work independently
  • Creative problem solving skills
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to efficiently manage multiple tasks
  • Experience in the veterinary field
  • Willingness to learn and grow in the field of veterinary behavior (While experience in behavior is a plus, we are open to enthusiastic, forward-thinking applicants who are truly excited about the field of behavior and are willing to gain skills and experience over time)
  • Willingness to attend continuing education in behavior
  • Willingness to collaborate with other specialty services and the emergency department Additional applicant qualities/skills/certifications that will be considered:
  • Familiarity with learning theory and humane behavior modification principles
  • Familiarity with low stress handling techniques
  • Fear Free Certified professional
  • Certified veterinary technician (CVT/RVT/LVT) or equivalent experience
  • Interest in pursuing specialty training to become a board certified behavior technician via the Academy of Veterinary Behavior Technicians (https://avbt.net/)
