JOB TITLE:
Veterinary Technician
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Florida Wildlife Hospital is a busy non-profit organization that has been helping save the lives of sick, injured and orphaned native Florida wildlife since 1973. Last year good Samaritans brought us almost 8000 birds, mammals and reptiles in need of care. We are looking for a veterinary technician with a passion for conserving Florida's wildlife species that has the energy to keep up with the fast pace of our hospital!
Responsibilities:
  • Assist the veterinarian with the examination and intake process of new patients and any patients needing re-evaluation, including but not limited to restraint, taking lab samples, performing radiographs, administering medications, performing wound care/bandage changes, performing laser treatments, etc.
  • Efficiently clean, feed, medicate and provide all other necessary care based on the veterinarian's orders for all CCU patients (including rabies vector and high stress species orphaned juveniles).
  • Perform preliminary exams and prepare preliminary treatment plans when necessary
  • Maintain daily medical records (including cage cards, paper and computerized patient records, laboratory logs, radiology logs, etc.)
  • Prepare anesthesia machine, instruments, etc. for anesthetic/surgical procedures and monitor patient vitals during anesthesia while assisting the veterinarian during the procedure; help recover patients post anesthesia; clean and autoclave instruments, etc.
  • Collect samples and perform in-house lab testing and/or prepare lab samples to be sent out
  • Respond to emergency intakes in an urgent manner to assess and make decisions regarding the need for euthanasia and perform euthanasia when appropriate.
  • Lead and train volunteers and interns working in our CCU department.
  • Maintain medical equipment and maintain cleanliness of medical areas
  • Routinely restock and monitor inventory and report items that need to be ordered to the veterinarian and/or the hospital manager.
  • Perform any other duties as requested by the veterinarian or hospital/rehabilitation manager.
Other requirements:
  • High school diploma
  • Minimum of 2 years experience as a veterinary technician (certification not required). Experience with wildlife rehabilitation or avian/exotics is a plus.
  • Basic computer skills and an understanding of practice management software and electronic medical records keeping
  • Ability to stand for prolonged hours, kneel, bend and lift, as well as work in the elements at times
  • Ability to work one weekend day per week.
  • Must be vaccinated for rabies or willing to become vaccinated

$15.50 - $18.00 per hour
