Position Summary The Kennel Technician provides compassionate, high-quality care to meet the basic needs of animals undergoing grooming, boarding, or hospitalization at Dunn Animal Hospital. This role requires a professional demeanor during client interactions, strong communication skills, and the ability to thrive within a fast-paced team environment.

Schedule Flexibility:

This position requires availability for standard operating hours, as well as select weekends and holidays.

Job Duties Animal Care & Handling Daily Management:

Walk and turn out boarded dogs multiple times daily for exercise and elimination.

Clinical Support:

Restrain and handle animals safely, assisting veterinarians and veterinary technicians as requested.

Specialized Grooming:

Bathe, dry, and groom boarding pets according to breed requirements and owner instructions, including nail trims and coat rake outs.

Medical Monitoring:

Assist with the care of hospitalized patients, administer prescribed medications, and accurately document all treatments.

Samples Collection:

Obtain animal weights, stool samples, and urine samples according to medical requirements.

Facility Maintenance & Hygiene Sanitation:

Deep-clean, disinfect, and maintain kennels, cages, runs, and stalls throughout the day to eliminate waste, prevent disease spread, and maintain a fresh-smelling facility. Launder towels and blankets as needed.

Sterilization:

Wash and sterilize all food and water bowls and perform general hospital cleaning to prevent disease spread.

Boarding Areas:

Maintain areas through proper stocking and cleaning. Remove and dispose of all trash to keep kennel areas neat and tidy.

Groundskeeping:

Patrol hospital grounds daily to collect trash and stool, clean pooper scoopers, empty entrance trash cans, and sanitize the astroturf area using designated spray applications.

Facility Appearance:

Facility is clean and organized.

Consumables are stocked appropriately:

paper towels, toilet paper, soap dispensers, etc. Open UPS, FedEx, food deliveries, etc., and place in proper locations.

Surgical and Dental Rooms:

Stock appropriate items including instruments, packs, syringes, and pill bottles.

Observation & Documentation Health Assessment:

Observe animal behavior, appearance, and physical condition for symptoms of illness or stress (e.g., nausea, diarrhea, hot spots, poor appetite) and report findings to the doctor.

Elimination Tracking:

Monitor animal elimination during walks, noting and reporting abnormalities like hard stool, loose stool, or unusual color.

Record Keeping:

Maintain precise records of feeding schedules, general appearance, and behavior for all boarded, groomed, or hospitalized animals.

Organization:

Keep cages properly numbered and ensure all personal pet property (food, medication, toys, leashes) is clearly identified and stored in designated areas.

Discharge Quality:

Verify that discharging animals are clean, fresh-smelling, and officially cleared by a doctor or veterinary technician before leaving. Perform other duties/tasks as assigned to ensure the health and safety of the animals as well as meet the needs of the hospital.
